Wendy Ergler, School Librarian |
My name is Wendy Ergler. I am the librarian here at HES. Students attend a library class including a checkout every week in grades K-4. Students in grades 5-6 come in every other week for checkout and they come every week for one quarter for a class. They may also be in the library more often to work on projects. They are always welcome to come in and return books and check out new ones with their teacher’s permission. We have many volunteering opportunities throughout the year in the library. Click here to register as a volunteer at HES to get started helping in the library. I look forward to working with you and your child this year.

This event will provide a structured opportunity for parents and guardians to meet with teachers and learn important detailed information about academic outcomes for each subject, curriculum changes, expectations for the school year, supports for students, communication methods for parents, and more.
6:00-6:40 p.m. Session 1

Get2Green is an FCPS environmental stewardship program for students. Here at Hayfield, we are working to make a positive impact on our environment through recycling initiatives and gardening projects. During our meetings, we will engage in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.
Students in grades 5 and 6 are invited to join our Green Team, led by Mrs. Taylor. The group will be limited to 20 participants to ensure proper supervision. We will meet before school from 7:45 a.m. - 8:25 a.m. on the dates listed on the form.
Please complete and submit this form to sign your student up for our Green Team! If you have any questions, please reach out to Alaina Taylor (ataylor8@fcps.edu).
Safety Drills During the School Year
Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.
The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.
Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.
⚠️ Know Our Security Terms
FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.
Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.
If students, staff, or families have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.
SEL Screener Parent Notification and Updates
The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October.
Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit FCPS’ Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
New Math Screening and Growth Assessment for Elementary Students
Starting in September, FCPS elementary schools will use the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Math assessment to assess grade level mathematics skills in grades 1-6. The MAP Math test along with the iReady Reading test fulfill a state requirement to measure academic growth in grades 3-6 throughout the school year.
MAP Math tests are administered in the fall, winter, and spring. They help teachers identify students' strengths and areas where they may need more support.
Families can learn more about MAP Growth assessments by visiting the MAP Test Information webpage.
Please consider donating to Hayfield Elementary's Hawks Kettle. Snacks donated are to ensure all students that need a snack have one. You may purchase items shipped from another retailer or drop off items to the school during school hours. Thank you for your generosity!
