The Wildcat Weekly - August 31, 2025

12thman

Centreville Students, Families, and Community,

I hope you are enjoying the long weekend!

We’re off to a fantastic start this school year, and last week was no exception. Our students continue to show why Wildcat Nation is the best in the county. We've seen a noticeable decrease in cell phone-related incidents, and students have done a great job settling into routines, especially with the weapons detection system now running smoothly thanks to their cooperation.

We ended the week with our first home football game, and the school spirit was undeniable! Our 12th man showed up strong, and the Wildcats played with heart from start to finish. It was a great way to close out the week and celebrate the strength of our community.

Looking ahead, this Wednesday is our Back to School Night. The evening will begin at 6:00 PM with Senior Parent Night, hosted by our Student Services team. This session is packed with important information to help our seniors and their families navigate their final year at Centreville and prepare for life after graduation. Then, at 7:00 PM, families will have the chance to walk their student’s schedule, meet our dedicated staff, and learn more about course content and expectations for the year.

Next week, there will be no school for students on Tuesday, September 9, due to the special election. We also encourage all families to attend our first PTSA meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 10. And don’t forget, Homecoming Week is just around the corner! Details will be shared soon in the Upcoming Events section.

Thank you and Go Wildcats!

Dr. Erik Healey, Principal

Be sure to book your session soon so you don’t miss out on this important milestone.

September 3 - 9th Grade Wellness Screener: On September 3rd, 5th, and 9th groups of 9th grade students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. We are using a program called Signs of Suicide (SOS). The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help. Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening form. This form cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should seek help from a mental health professional. If you do NOT wish your child to participate in this program and/or screener, please contact Kristin Girardin, Director of Student Services.

September 3 - Back to School Night: We’re excited to invite you to Centreville’s Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 3 starting at 7:00PM. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teachers, learn about classroom expectations, walk your student’s schedule, and see how we can work together for a successful school year.

September 10 - PTSA Meeting: Please join us for the monthly PTSA meeting on Wednesday, September 10 at 7:00 PM in the Centreville High School Library. Dr. Healey will be sharing a “State of Centreville” presentation to provide updates on key changes in the 2025-2026 school year including cell phone policy, weapons detection screening, and modifications to the bell schedule. We invite you to join the Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA) to help foster a positive and inclusive school climate. Your involvement in PTSA is an opportunity to strengthen relationships and make a lasting impact on our school community. If you are not a member of the CVHS PTSA, learn more about membership, donations, and information from previous meetings here.

September 13 - Music Tag Day: Tag Day is the music department’s biggest fundraiser each year. Groups of students with a parent chaperone go door to door, asking for monetary donations in support of the Band, Choir and Orchestra programs. The funds raised provide sectional instruction, the purchase of equipment and music and more. Thank you in advance for supporting our performing arts programs!

September 15 - CATS Period Begins: Students and families may have noticed on our bell schedule this year the addition of CATS Period in lieu of PLUS Rotations. CATS (Continuous Achievement & Targeted Support) period is designed to provide students with targeted intervention during the school day. Students will either be identified for intervention based on data and needs will be prioritized based on time of year, testing windows, and progress toward completion of graduation requirements or they will be assigned to a study hall during this time. Students identified for intervention will remain in their Intervention cycles for approximately 6 weeks. Students not identified for intervention will be assigned to a study hall, but will be able to make appointments to see other study hall teachers. Students will receive a ROAR lesson on September 11 to describe the expectations and procedures for CATS period.

JumpStart

AP Jump Start Program: 9th grade AP Human Geography students are participating in a Jumpstart program for two weeks during their Advisory period.  As 9th graders, this is their first exposure to college-level coursework, and this program is designed to provide them with AVID-based learning strategies to help them succeed in this and other advanced courses.  During their time together, they are learning how to decipher challenging academic material, practicing focused note taking, and organizing and reviewing classroom materials to effectively study for summative assessments.  It's been a great way to start the year off strong!

spanish

Teamwork in Spanish: In Senora Givens Spanish 1 class this week, students put their language skills and teamwork to the test in a fun, fast-paced Kahoot challenge! Working in teams, they answered questions about common Spanish phrases, earning materials to build the tallest tower in the room. Learning and a little friendly competition filled the classroom as students stayed engaged and motivated to use their Spanish in a creative and interactive way. ¡Excelente trabajo, estudiantes!

News from Student Services

Upcoming Changes to FCPS High School Transcripts: To provide a more comprehensive and accurate record of a student's educational journey, FCPS students’ transcripts will now specify the location where certain courses are taken. This change, which was approved by the School Board in December 2024, will affect courses taken at the following FCPS locations:

  •  FCPS High School Academies
  •  FCPS Interagency Alternative Schools
  •  FCPS Online Campus
  • Classes taken concurrently at other FCPS schools

Starting September 26, 2025, students’ transcripts will list these courses under a separate heading for the corresponding program. Transcripts and report cards printed before this date will still show all courses listed under the student's base school.

This update will provide a clearer picture of the diverse academic opportunities our students are pursuing across the district. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our Student Services office.

SEL Screener Parent Notification and Updates: The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October.

Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit FCPS’ Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS: At Centreville High School, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.

Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.

These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.

We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.

Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.

We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.

As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.

Remember to Complete Permission Forms for School Resources: Families can easily grant permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. Opt your child in or out of a variety of online educational tools and choose how student information is managed. Please visit the Parent Digital Consent webpage today to access the system. Watch this video to see how to use the tool.

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations: Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Tuesday, November 18, students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. Visit the How To Submit Immunization Documents webpage for step-by-step guidance on how to check your child’s immunization status and submit updated immunization information

Please check with your health care provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2025-26 school year. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources. Be wise and immunize!
