Atoms Athletics Recap

Golf has played three matches to date and currently hold a 2-1 team record on the season. The Atoms started the season falling to Hayfield but have won their next two matches defeating Falls Church 164-169 on August 20 and followed it up this week with a 176-179 win over the Wolves of Justice. The Atoms tee is up Thursday vs Lewis.

Girls Volleyball started the season with a district game vs Lewis. The night started with the freshman and JV teams falling to the Lancers but the varsity game was different as the Atoms took care of business in three sets. The Atoms showed in their first match that they may be a dark horse team in the National District this year. The Atoms returned to the court Wednesday vs Fairfax. The Lions caught a few breaks in the match but the Atoms played tough throughout falling in four sets. The Atoms serve it at home vs Edison on Wednesday.

Boys Volleyball traveled to Lewis to opening the season Monday evening. The Atoms are breaking in new players across the board as they returned one starter to a young team that looks to gain experience over the first couple weeks of the season. The Atoms played hard and fell in four sets to the Lancers. The Atoms welcome Fairfax to Annandale on Wednesday and the youth and inexperienced showed a bit as the Lions took out the Atoms in three sets. The Atoms travel to Edison Wednesday evening.

Field Hockey started the season with their home opener Monday evening vs Meridian. The Mustangs came out scrapping and challenging the Atoms throughout the night. The Atoms didn't back down taking a 1-1 game into the second half before the Atoms put on in the back of the net to open the season with a 2-1 win! The Atoms welcome West Po to campus Tuesday evening.

Football welcomed Marshall to J. Wallace Bolding Stadium for the home opener of the 25 season. The Atoms have several new players across many positions but played hard and showed grit throughout the game. The score doesn't depict the way the game was played as several miscues by the Atoms deep into the Marshall territory resulted in missed opportunities to get on the board. The Atoms moved the ball on the Statesman throughout but were unable to cross the goal line while the defense played tough making Marshall earn every yard they gained. The Atoms travel to Freedom-Woodbridge for their second game on Friday.

Boys and Girls Cross Country had their first meet of the season Tuesday evening. Both teams ran the race with a purpose of being a team and getting their legs under them in preparation for the National District Meet in October. The Atoms kept to the script and set the pace as teams and will look to continue their team mindset run in the next meet.
