 #BackToSchool #NewYearNewConnections
Dear Haycock Families,
We hope you are enjoying our Labor Day holiday. We look forward to seeing our students again tomorrow morning-Tuesday, September 2.
We are kicking off Haycock's 70th year with a back to school picnic on Tuesday, September 16 from 5:30 to 7:00 on the field behind Haycock. Pack dinner for your family, bring your blanket and chairs, and connect with other families. We will have a DJ and cotton candy compliments of the PTA. There will also be a pop-up book fair in the library from 5:30 to 7:30 that evening. We hope you can stop by. It's a great way to come together as a community to kick off a special year for Haycock.
Although we love our pets, FCPS prohibits having dogs and any other pets on our school grounds. Thank you for not walking your dogs on school property. Please be mindful of this policy during student arrival and dismissal.
You will receive an email this week confirming what we understand your plans are for your student(s) to get home on our first early release Wednesday on September 10. Students will be dismissed at 1:05 p.m. SACC will be open on early release Wednesdays. Any students needing after school care will not receive instruction. They will be monitored and supervised by instructional assistants and specialists so that classroom teachers have the opportunity to engage in professional learning and collaborative instructional planning.
There is lots of information below about upcoming student assessments, registering to volunteer at Haycock, and FCPS resources for families. Read on!
With appreciation for your partnership,
Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu

📚 Haycock Back-to-School Book Fair SOON 📚
When
Pop-Up Book Fair September 15-17.
September 16 is Family Night (5:30-7:30pm), coinciding with the PTA’s back to school picnic.
Be sure to come by the library and revel in the book joy (or maybe sign up to help during the Book Fair too)!
Payments
Book Fair accepts cash, check, Visa, Master Card, Discover, Apple Pay, Google Pay and eWallets.
eWallets
eWallets are electronic payment accounts for your student.
Each student needs their own eWallet account.
Link the eWallet to your credit card and you decide the payment limit.
Only the amount of your student’s purchase (up to the limit) will be charged to the card.
Go to Bookworm Central to start an eWallet or watch the Video here.
(If your student had an eWallet last year, please log in and check whether any funds are left (or reset the limit) and make sure the credit card is still valid.)
Volunteers
Sign up here to help/make sure to register at the Volunteer FCPS site, too!
We will also have a longer Book Fair from December 8-12, so announcements will come about that as it gets closer.
Thank you for supporting our Book Fairs —it makes a big difference for our student readers and our library! 📚

Ensuring Student Safety:
Register for Volunteer FCPS
At Haycock Elementary, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.
Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.
We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS, click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.
Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.
We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.
As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questionspage to learn more.
New Math Screening and Growth Assessment for Elementary Students
Starting in September, FCPS elementary schools will use the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Math assessment to assess grade level mathematics skills in grades 1-6. The MAP Math test along with the iReady Reading test fulfill a state requirement to measure academic growth in grades 3-6 throughout the school year.
MAP Math tests are administered in the fall, winter, and spring. They help teachers identify students' strengths and areas where they may need more support.
Families can learn more about MAP Growth assessments by visiting the MAP Test Informationwebpage.
Social and Emotional Learning Screener
The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October.
Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit FCPS’ Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
Get to Know FCPS and the Resources Available to Families
We know that as a parent or caregiver, you play a critical role in your child’s education. The FCPS Family Academy compiles classes, webinars, workshops, and programs offered by the school division to help you support your child’s needs and learning at home.
The Family Academy also includes information about resources to help ensure your child has what they need to succeed. Check out some of the upcoming Family Academy sessions:

Visit the Family Academy catalog for more information on these sessions and to register to attend.
🌩️ Weather Happens, FCPS is Ready
Virginia is no stranger to inclement weather. From severe thunderstorms to high winds to flooding, there are many different types of weather events that can (and sometimes do) impact our schools. But FCPS has a plan for each of these scenarios that prioritizes the safety of all our students and staff. What does FCPS do during a flood? What about a severe thunderstorm?
Answers to those questions along with resources you can use to prepare for different weather events are now available on the new FCPS weather safety webpage.
❤️FCPS Cares
Take a moment to acknowledge and affirm a Haycock staff member when they go above and beyond in demonstrating care and dedication that ensures every one of our students is seen, heard, and valued. FCPS Cares.
A heartfelt thank you to the PTA for all the ways they made teacher return week a great kickoff to the school year for our staff.❤️ (Including classroom delivery of all the Sprout supplies boxes for students!)
