Potential Middle School AAP Center for the Annandale Pyramid

Mason District Community,

The Annandale Pyramid is one of only two pyramids in the division without an elementary or middle school AAP Center. This gap in service continuity creates a situation where many Annandale pyramid students must transfer twice in elementary/middle school to receive full-time AAP services. These students are also forced to travel to schools outside of the Annandale pyramid.

Currently, students who access the K-5 Local Level 4 full-time programs at Annandale Terrace ES, Braddock ES, and North Springfield ES must either transition for one year to Canterbury Woods ES for grade 6 and then transition to Frost MS or attend their neighborhood middle school to access advanced courses via enrollment in four middle school Honors level courses.

In addition, full-time Local Level 4 advanced academic students at Mason Crest ES must attend the AAP Center program at Belvedere ES, then transition to Glasgow MS for full-time AAP services. Most of those students must then return to Falls Church HS.

In July 2025, the Office of Facilities Planning Services (OFPS) created a report including two scenarios that would provide a continuous pathway of services for students eligible for full-time AAP from Annandale Terrace ES, Braddock ES, and North Springfield ES. This would establish an AAP center at either Poe Middle School or Holmes Middle School.

Based on the facilities analysis, both schools are considered to have sufficient capacity for current programs and future growth.

Given all capacity considerations, the Superintendent recommends Poe MS as the site for a new Full-Time AAP Center in the Annandale pyramid.

What's Next?

The School Board is scheduled to vote on whether staff are to explore a new Annandale pyramid MS AAP Center at Poe MS during the September 25, 2025 School Board meeting.

It will be my advocacy for the Board to approve this plan. The benefits to students are exponential. With the establishment of an AAP Center at Poe MS, students will have the opportunity to remain in their community with their friends and parents will not be forced to decide between the pursuit of full-time AAP services for their students or remain connected to their community. The division will more equitably provide access to advanced programming and reduce transportation costs.

If the Board votes to proceed, community meetings will be scheduled to invite families and guardians from affected schools to learn more about the plan and to provide their feedback. These meetings would likely take place in October 2025 - pending the Board’s approval.

The Superintendent would then develop a final recommendation for the Board’s consideration in December 2025 for a possible 2026-27 start for a new middle school AAP Center for the Annandale Pyramid at Poe MS.

I welcome your thoughts on this matter. Please respond to this survey to provide your feedback.
