The Wildcat Weekly - August 24, 2025

Centreville Students, Families, and Community,

We had an amazing first week of school! It’s been a pleasure reconnecting with students, meeting our new Wildcats, and hearing about their summer experiences and adventures.

Despite the changes to our cell phone policy, students have done an exceptional job following the new expectations. As I’ve walked through the hallways and visited classrooms, I’ve seen students engaging more with one another, which has been great to see. I’m incredibly proud of how well our students are adjusting, and I’m hopeful we can continue building on this strong start as we move through the year.

Our students have also shown patience and adaptability as we began implementing our weapons detection system last Thursday. The FCPS Safety and Security team was on-site to support the rollout and noted that this was one of the smoothest first days with the system they had seen. Students have already begun establishing routines that help the process move more quickly. We’ll continue to refine and improve the system and keep families informed along the way.

As a reminder, students may continue to request level-up or level-down schedule changes this week, based on space availability in classes. Our counselors have been working hard to respond to student and family requests and will continue doing their best to address them in a timely manner.

Thank you and Go Wildcats!

Dr. Erik Healey, Principal

September 3 - 9th Grade Wellness Screener: On September 3rd, 5th, and 9th groups of 9th grade students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. We are using a program called Signs of Suicide (SOS). The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help. Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening form. This form cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should seek help from a mental health professional. If you do NOT wish your child to participate in this program and/or screener, please contact Kristin Girardin, Director of Student Services.

September 3 - Back to School Night: We’re excited to invite you to Centreville’s Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 3 starting at 7:00PM. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teachers, learn about classroom expectations, and see how we can work together for a successful school year.

September 10 - PTSA Meeting: Please join us for the monthly PTSA meeting on Wednesday, September 10 at 7:00 PM in the Centreville High School Library. Dr. Healey will be sharing a “State of Centreville” presentation to provide updates on key changes in the 2025-2026 school year. We invite you to join the Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA) to help foster a positive and inclusive school climate. Your involvement in PTSA is an opportunity to strengthen relationships and make a lasting impact on our school community. If you are not a member of the CVHS PTSA, learn more about membership, donations, and information from previous meetings here.

September 13 - Music Tag Day: Tag Day is the music department’s biggest fundraiser each year. Groups of students with a parent chaperone go door to door, asking for monetary donations in support of the Band, Choir and Orchestra programs. The funds raised provide sectional instruction, the purchase of equipment and music and more. Thank you in advance for supporting our performing arts programs!

Important Information from FCPS

Transportation Patience and Safety: Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.

If your student’s bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays.

Help Your Child Navigate the Lunch Line: Help your child get through the lunch line quickly and have more time to eat:

  • Teach your child their student ID number to receive meals at school.
  • Sign up for and add money to MySchoolBucks to purchase meals at school.
  • Apply for free and reduced-price meals. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should submit a new application as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

If your child has any food allergies, learn how to submit accommodations for dietary restrictions and allergens. Access menus for breakfast, lunch, and other school meals, as well as allergen and nutrition information.

Touchdown! Girls Flag Football Takes the Field This Fall: Starting this fall, we’re piloting Girls Flag Football along with every high school in FCPS, thanks to a partnership with the Washington Commanders. With college scholarships already available and Olympic inclusion coming in 2028, there’s never been a better time to join. Interested students should stop by the Activities Office to find out more.Watch this hype video to learn more about this empowering team sport. Read more about flag football in FCPS.

See Where Your Child Goes Online With Lightspeed: Parents can access their child’s activity on FCPS devices through Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service. Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited.

The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours. Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Training Available Through Public Health Ambassador Program: The Public Health Youth Ambassador Program (PHYAP) trains 10th through 12th grade high school students across Fairfax County about methods to reduce opioid use, teen mental health issues, and becoming a community health worker. The program provides certifications from two nationally-known public health institutions (Morehouse College and George Mason University). Apply for the fall cohort by 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 28. Learn more about the Public Health Youth Ambassador Program

Volunteer FCPS Helps Community Members Connect With Schools: A new volunteer management system, Volunteer FCPS, will allow students, parents/caregivers, and community members to register and search volunteer opportunities within the school division.

All volunteers (new or returning) will register in Volunteer FCPS, complete a volunteer orientation, and be required to sign in using the visitor kiosk. Some volunteers will also be required to undergo a background check. Visit the Volunteer FCPS website for details.

  • Solicite comidas gratis o a precio reducido.
