 We had a wonderful first week of school! Below are a few reminders regarding Groveton arrival and dismissal procedures.
Arrival and Tardiness
- Doors Open: The school doors will open at 8:45 AM. Please do not leave your children unsupervised before this time.
- School Start Time: Students must be in the building by 9:00 AM. Any students arriving after this time will be considered tardy.
- Tardy Protocol: If your child is tardy, you must escort them to the main office to obtain a tardy pass.
Kiss & Ride Procedures
- Location: Kiss and ride is located outside of door 6 by the gym.
Staff will be outside to help manage traffic and assist students.
- Student Safety: Students must stay in the car until a Groveton staff member opens the car door. Please ensure that your child exits on the passenger side of the vehicle.
- Parent Responsibilities: Parents should remain in the car and not get out to assist their child. Our staff will handle this to keep the process efficient and safe.
- For student safety, and to ensure smooth procedures, please do not drive or park in unauthorized areas including the turn lanes, bus loop, the side entrance by door 4 and the lower parking lot.
Bus Riders:
- Arrival Time: Students should be at their bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled arrival time to ensure they do not miss the bus. The school is not responsible for any buses that are running late to bus stops. You may add the FCPS bus app to follow your students' whereabouts if they are riding a bus.
- Kindergarteners must be met at the bus stop by a designated adult. If someone is not there to meet the student they will be returned to Groveton.

Families are welcome to send stickers, a craft, or some other kind of token for a class to celebrate a birthday or event. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept food (cupcakes, candy, etc.) due to food allergies and family preferences.

Friday, August 29, and Monday, September 1, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. See the complete school year calendar.

Groveton Back to School Night will be on Wednesday September 10, 2024, from 5:00pm-7:00pm.
This event is very important for parents and guardians, as it offers a chance to meet teachers and hear directly from them about plans for the year ahead and classroom policies.
The schedule for the evening is the following:
- 5:00-5:30: Welcome & Updates in the Cafeteria
- 5:45-6:15: Session 1 in classrooms
- 6:15-6:20: Transition
- 6:20-6:50: Session 2 in classrooms
If you bring your children with you, they will need to remain with you throughout the evening.
We look forward to seeing you on September 10, 2025!

Don’t forget your back-to-school forms and checklists! Make sure you have a SIS ParentVUE account for your family and log in to find important forms and updates.
If you do not have a ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage.
☑️ Update Contact Information
Be among the first to know about weather closings, bus delays, and other critical communications from your school and FCPS by providing your cell phone number and email in SIS ParentVUE. To update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, click the “Online Packets” tab in the upper right of the screen, then click the “Online Verification/Update” icon.
Parents/caregivers who do not have a ParentVUE account should contact their school for an activation code to create an account, or print and complete the Emergency Care Information Form and submit it to our front office.
☑️ Submit Absences
Parents/caregivers can submit daylong absences through SIS ParentVUE. Log in to the platform and click “Report Absence.” Partial day absences and changes of transportation should still be reported directly to your school’s front office.
☑️ Review and Submit Immunization Forms
Parents/caregivers can check their child’s immunization compliance and submit immunization records in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to our front office.
If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a health care provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.
If your student’s bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Please contact the Transportation Office at 703-446-2150 with any additional questions. For concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact the FCPS Office of Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.
Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive email messages about bus delays.

 Help your child get through the lunch line quickly and have more time to eat:
- Teach your child their student ID number to receive meals at school.
- Sign up for and add money to MySchoolBucks to purchase meals at school.

Apply for free and reduced-price meals. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should submit a new application as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
If your child has any food allergies, learn how to submit accommodations for dietary restrictions and allergens.
Access menus for breakfast, lunch, and other school meals, as well as allergen and nutrition information.

Parents can access their child’s activity on FCPS devices through Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service. Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited.
The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Benchmark Unit 1 in Language Arts is about life science. Students in K-5 will be learning about plants, animals, and nature. Sixth grade students will learn about the natural balance of nature.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: What are some ways we can take care of nature and living things?
- Activity: Pick an animal and act out how it moves or survives in its habitat — see if family members can guess!
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
