Dear Roadrunner Families,
Welcome back, and what a wonderful first week of school it has been! We are so thrilled to have our hallways and classrooms filled with the energy of our amazing students once again. It was a week of big smiles and new friendships, and we loved seeing the connections being made.
We had some very special visitors on our first day of school. Dr. Reid, our Superintendent, along with School Board members Rachna Sizemore Heizer and Ryan McElveen, visited many of our classrooms. They had the opportunity to see the amazing things our staff and students were engaging in on the very first day!
Our teachers and students spent the week building relationships and practicing important routines and procedures. This foundational work helps ensure a smooth and successful year for everyone.
We also want to remind you about using TalkingPoints, a free app that helps families stay connected with our school. It's a great tool for us to communicate with you! With TalkingPoints, you can receive important messages from teachers, translated into your preferred language, and easily communicate back. We've already sent messages this week, so please be sure to check the app for important information.
As we kick off the new school year, we are excited about all the learning and growth that will happen in the coming months. We look forward to a fantastic year filled with engaging activities, new discoveries, and a strong sense of community.
Sincerely, Christie Yarn, Principal Alison Butler, Assistant Principal
Action Required: Early Release Wednesdays
Please note: While we anticipate that most students will be dismissed at 12:15 on limited early release Wednesdays, we recognize that some families may require childcare. These students will be supervised by school-based staff. No new instruction will take place, as after-school care is strictly supervision.
ACTION REQUIRED BY 8/25: Elementary school parents and caregivers should log in to the FCPS Parent Digital Consent system to review and provide consent for Early Release Wednesday Childcare. To learn more about Parent Digital Consent click here.
-
OPT IN if you require childcare on our limited early release Wednesdays.
-
OPT OUT if your child will go home (or to childcare arranged with SACC or another provider) at the early release time.

Arrival & Dismissal Reminders
We would like to extend a huge thank you to all our families for your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and efficient arrival and dismissal process.
As a friendly reminder, please help us ensure student safety by not entering the bus loop between 8:00-8:30 AM and 3:00-3:30 PM. We also encourage everyone to utilize our Kiss & Ride line instead of parking on Olley Lane.
For more details and a visual guide to our arrival and dismissal procedures, please refer to the last page of our digital Family Handbook.
Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS
Click Here to Sign Up to Volunteer at Little Run!
At Little Run, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.
Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.
These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.
We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS, click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.
Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.
We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.
As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.

Please note: If you think you might want to chaperone a field trip this year, you must sign up as a Level 3 volunteer which takes some time. Please click on "Volunteer FCPS" above to get started as soon as possible.

🔍 See Where Your Child Goes Online With Lightspeed
Parents can access their child’s activity on FCPS devices through Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service. Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited.
The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

📚 Learning About Life Science in Language Arts
Benchmark Unit 1 in Language Arts is about life science. Sixth grade students will be learning about relationships in nature and the role we play in the balance of nature.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: What’s your favorite thing about our earth?
- Activity: Choose a specific area (backyard, park, etc.).Identify and count the different types of plants, insects, birds, and other organisms you can find. Discuss how these organisms interact with each other and why they are important.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
