This Week at Eagle View...

Principal's Message

Dear Eagle View Families,

What an incredible first week of school! It was truly amazing to welcome our students back into the building and feel the joy and energy throughout our hallways. I especially enjoyed getting to know our new students this week, and we are so excited to see them learn and grow as part of the Eagle View community this year.

One of the highlights of the week was sorting our new students in grades 1–6 and our Kindergarteners into their Houses. The excitement on our students’ faces was priceless as they welcomed their new peers. A special moment was when our 6th graders proudly joined the Kindergarteners as they spun the wheel to be sorted—such a wonderful example of our Eagle View spirit of community and belonging.

Looking ahead, please keep these important dates in mind:

  • Friday, August 29 – School holiday
  • Monday, September 1 – Labor Day holiday
  • Wednesday, September 3Back to School Night

Please note: our Family Picnic, initially scheduled for today, has been postponed. We will share the new date as soon as it is finalized.

Thank you for a wonderful start to the school year. We are looking forward to many more moments of learning, laughter, and growth together.

Sincerely,

KJ An

Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.

TREX Challenge: Help Eagle View get a Trex bench!

Our school is participating in the TREX Recycling Challenge, and we need your help! We're on a mission to collect 1,000 pounds of plastic film to earn a TREX bench for our school. Since May, EV has already collected over 200 pounds of plastic!

What is the TREX Challenge?

The TREX Challenge is a nationwide program that encourages schools to collect and recycle plastic film. TREX, a company that makes sustainable decking and outdoor furniture, turns the collected plastic into useful products, like the very bench we're hoping to win! This is a fantastic way to teach our students about the importance of recycling and keeping our community clean.

How can you help?

Simply start collecting these items at home! The best part is that many of the plastic items you use every day can be recycled.

You can drop off your collected plastic film in the designated bin for your house in the front lobby. The house that collects the most plastic film will earn special recognition and bragging rights! Please make sure all plastic film is clean, dry, and free of food residue.

What to collect:

  • Plastic grocery bags
  • Bread bags
  • Dry cleaning bags
  • Cereal box liners
  • Case overwrap (like the plastic around paper towels or bottled water)
  • Newspaper sleeves
  • Produce bags
  • Ziploc bags (or similar resealable bags)

Thank you for your support in helping us reach our goal and for teaching our students a valuable lesson in sustainability. Together, we can make a big impact!

📚 Learning About Life Science in Language Arts 📚

Benchmark Unit 1 in Language Arts is about life science. Students in K-5 will be learning about plants, animals, and nature. Sixth grade students will learn about the natural balance of nature.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: What are some ways we can take care of nature and living things?
  • Activity: Pick an animal and act out how it moves or survives in its habitat — see if family members can guess!

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website

Transportation Patience and Safety

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.

If your student’s bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Please contact the Transportation Office at  703-249-7000 with any additional questions. For concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact the FCPS Office of Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.

Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive email messages about bus delays.

Student Smart Watches and Cell Phones

Please remind your child that FCPS is phone-free! For elementary school students, this means:

  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Cell phones and personal devices (airpods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).

If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our main office at 703-322-3100. Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone and personal device policy.

🔍 See Where Your Child Goes Online With Lightspeed

Parents can access their child’s activity on FCPS devices through Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service. Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited.

The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.
