 Dear Haycock Families,
It was a great first week of school! We enjoyed seeing our students return, and we appreciated the opportunity to share information with parents on Thursday evening at Back to School Night. We're off to a strong start.
We want to extend a special thank you and our appreciation to the Fath and Olsen families for their help and dedication this summer. They helped us care for the fish and turtles and watered our gardens. Our raised beds and gardens look as good as they do because of the Faths and Olsens. Many thanks!
We appreciate your patience as Transportation is working out the hiccups with buses. If your child's bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus Mobile App to receive the delayed bus report.
As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to Haycock— are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk located in the main office. Please see important and new information below about registering for volunteering, which includes chaperoning for field trips.
With appreciation for your partnership,
Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu
Heather Boyd, AP HABoyd@fcps.edu
Krystal Styles, AP krstyles@fcps.edu

Early Release Wednesday Parent Information
Our first early release Wednesday is approaching soon. Our students will be dismissed at 1:05 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10.
While we anticipate that most students will be dismissed at 1:05 p.m. on limited early release Wednesdays, we recognize that some families may require childcare. These students will be supervised by instructional assistants or other support staff. No new instruction will take place, as after-school care is strictly supervision.
Parents and caregivers should log into the Parent Digital Consent system to review and provide consent to a variety of resources and services including information on how your child will get home on the early release Wednesdays.
- OPT IN if you require childcare on our limited early release Wednesdays.
- OPT OUT if your child will go home (or to childcare arranged with SACC or another provider) at the early release time.
Families need to complete the opt in form by toda, Monday, August 25, for after-school supervision for all early release Wednesdays. If a family needs to change their selection, they should notify our front office at least one week in advance to ensure enough staff are available to provide supervision.
Student Smart Watches and Cell Phones
Remind your child that FCPS is phone-free! For elementary school students, this means:
- Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, internet viewing, and calls) are to be off during the school day.
- Cell phones and personal devices (airpods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).
If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our main office at 703-531-4000. If you have questions, please see the FCPS cell phone and personal device policy
Help Your Child Navigate the Lunch Line
Help your child get through the lunch line quickly and have more time to eat:
-
Teach your child their student ID number to receive meals at school.
- Sign up for and add money to MySchoolBucks to purchase meals at school.
-
Apply for free and reduced-price meals. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should submit a new application as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
If your child has any food allergies, learn how to submit accommodations for dietary restrictions and allergens.
Access menus for breakfast, lunch, and other school meals, as well as allergen and nutrition information.

Ensuring Student Safety
Register for Volunteer FCPS
At Haycock, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students. Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.
We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at our school to visit the Haycock Volunteer site, click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.
Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.
We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.
School Picture Day is Coming- 9/17

Update on General Abilities Testing
Fairfax County Public Schools is now using the Naglieri General Abilities Test (NGAT) as our official ability screener and nationally normed assessment. The NGAT will be administered to all Grade 2 students and select students in Grades 3–7, replacing the CogAT (formerly given in Grade 2 and select Grades 3–7) and the NNAT3 (formerly given in Grade 1).
We will no longer offer the CogAT or NNAT3 for general ability testing, so requests to retake these assessments cannot be accommodated.
For students who have not yet used their one-time retake option, parents/guardians may request the NGAT for the fall administration. The NGAT provides a multi-domain score like the CogAT and is language-independent, similar to the NNAT3. All retake requests must be submitted by September 30, 2025 to:
Haycock Chorus: Calling All 5th & 6th Graders Who Love to Sing

Chorus for 5th and 6th grade is offered Mondays from 3:05-3:50 pm, starting on August 25th. These rehearsals are separate from your child's General Music and Band/Strings time.
