Dear Dranesville Families:
I hope your student and family had an amazing first week back to school. Visiting Dranesville Elementary, Hutchison Elementary, Coates Elementary, and Herndon Middle this week made me excited for the new school year. My conversations with staff and principals highlighted how deeply we care for every student on their unique learning journey. Through our Goal 2 of our 2023-30 Strategic Plan, we are committed to providing a learning environment where students are included, safe, supported, and empowered.
I’m excited to share below some of the new school year highlights like middle school fall basketball, safety screening, and the new bus technology, and you can see more of what’s new for the school year here. For the first few weeks of school, please be patient with bus transportation knowing the morning and afternoon arrival times will normalize soon. You can sign up for Here Comes the Bus mobile app to keep abreast of delays. Thank you, FCPS staff and families, for all you have done to prepare for a successful start to the 2025-26 school year!
This year, FCPS will be continuing the comprehensive boundary review work, and I will share updates in each newsletter, see below and my August 12th newsletter, for the latest news. I value our community’s input and encourage you to take part in the next community meetings later this fall.
Have a good Labor Day weekend,

FCPS Calendar Change- Tuesday, September 9
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has set Tuesday, September 9, 2025, as the date for a special election in Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. Because more than half of our schools serve as polling locations, the Fairfax County Office of Elections asked us to consider closing for the day. After careful review, we have decided that it is best to close all schools to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Therefore, all FCPS schools will be closed on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Principal Jones, New McLean High School Principal
I am pleased to introduce Ms. Raven Jones, the new principal of McLean High School, effective September 2, 2025. Also, I want to thank to McLean High School's acting principal, Ms. Missy Brady.
Ms. Jones comes to us with a wealth of experience and a strong track record of success within Fairfax County Public Schools. She is a highly respected leader who has served in various administrative roles, most recently as the principal of Luther Jackson Middle School. Her leadership at Luther Jackson earned her the prestigious 2023-2024 Outstanding New Principal award for FCPS.
Ms. Jones’s qualifications and demonstrated leadership align perfectly with the qualities our community prioritized. Her diverse background, including roles as a School Counselor, Assistant Principal, and Student Services Director, provides a strong foundation for addressing the critical need for student well-being. She has a proven ability to foster collaboration, having led teachers to develop streamlined professional learning communities that resulted in increased student performance.

Student Rights and Responsibilities
FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.
FCPS has created the Student Rights & Responsibilities: A Guide for Families to assist you in your efforts to help your child understand school rules and expectations. These rules apply during school, in both the classroom and the virtual environment, at school-sponsored activities, and include interactions between students as they travel to and from school. Teachers will review the rules with them during the first weeks of school. Please discuss these expectations with your child.
Phones Off and Away for the Whole School Day
Updates to FCPS' Cell Phone Policy
FCPS' policy for cell phones and personal devices (airpods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) helps students focus, learn, and engage without distractions. Starting this school year, high school students can no longer use their cell phones and other personal devices during passing periods. For all grade levels, cell phones are no longer permitted to be used as an instructional tool.
If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call your school’s main office. We encourage families to remind their student about FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level:
-
Elementary and Middle School: Cell phones and personal devices must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).
-
High School: Cell phones and personal devices must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell) with the exception of lunch time in designated lunch spaces.

Weapons Detection System at All Secondary Schools this Fall
As part of the ongoing commitment to strengthening layered safety and security programs, FCPS will continue to phase in a weapons detection system at all secondary schools this fall.
Click on photo to begin video
You can learn more about the system by watching this video and reading the Frequently Asked Questions on FCPS’ website. If you have additional questions, you can submit them online to the FCPS Chief of Safety and Security Office.
FBI’s Rap Back Service
As of July 1, new Virginia legislation now authorizes public schools to enroll employees, volunteers, and contractors in the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Rap Back — a continuous background check monitoring system. This initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening school safety and reinforces FCPS’ commitment to maintaining a secure environment for all members of its community. As the largest school division in Virginia, FCPS is at the forefront of this state-wide effort, helping to lay the groundwork for broader implementation across the Commonwealth. Ultimately, this program will contribute to the protection of nearly 1.3 million K–12 students across Virginia. Almost 18,000 of our employees have completed the form.
New Technology on Buses Enhances Student Safety
From Dr. Reid’s Weekly Reflections, learn about our our new tablet-based system on our school buses, which has:
- Turn-by-turn navigation and real-time route adjustments in case of detours.
- Radio Frequency ID (RFID) card scanning so that drivers can verify student identities, track when and where students get on and off the bus, and confirm that students are on the correct route.
Eventually, families will also be able to monitor their child’s location through the Here Comes the Bus app! Watch our video to learn more about the system and see a demonstration with Bus Driver Supervisor Lei Shi.
Bus Updates
Thank you for your patience as we all get used to the new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following kiss-and-ride procedures and being understanding while waiting for your children’s buses to arrive.
If a bus is delayed, parents and caregivers may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce bus delays of 30 minutes or more. Visit the Transportation Services webpage to find out who to contact with specific questions.
Apply for Free and Reduced Meals
Families that are earning less than 185% of the poverty level can receive breakfast and lunch for their students at no cost through the Free and Reduced Meals (FRM) program.
The application for FRM must be completed each school year and is now available for the 2025-26 school year. Students who were approved for FRM last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should reapply as soon as possible so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost. Families should reach out to their schools with questions or for assistance.
|
If you have children eligible for the Free and Reduced-price meals program, they may also be eligible to participate in other FCPS fee-based programs without paying a fee or by paying a reduced fee. They include:
- Advanced Placement fees (after six exams)
- Career and Technical Education Certification fees
- Driver Education fees
- Fine Arts fees
- Musical Instrument fees
- Online Campus fees
- Student Parking fees
- Technology and Engineering Education Material fees

Secondary Grading Updates
There are new secondary grading policies in 2025-26. The goal of these changes is to increase consistency and clarity of grading practices. Learn about middle and high school grading policy updates.
New FCPS Homework Policy
Learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends, and small routines at home can help build strong habits that support student success. Your child will have homework assignments to support our students in building lifelong academic habits and giving families a small window into the learning happening at school.
Why this shift? Research shows that short, developmentally appropriate practice at home can:
- Reinforce classroom learning
- Build responsibility, time management, and independent work habits
- Support reading growth through consistent reading at home
- Strengthen communication between school and home
Homework should not feel stressful or overwhelming. It’s meant to help your child grow. If you ever have concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher.
Updated Special Education and 504 Handbooks
The Department of Special Services has updated and translated key resources to help our families of students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and/or Section 504 Plan:
These resources help family and staff understand procedures, rights, and processes. Find additional information on the Special Education Instruction and Family Academy: Resources to Support Special Education and 504 Plans pages.
No-Cost Virtual Therapy for HS Students
Virtual therapy sessions are available to FCPS high school students at no cost to provide a safe space to address mental health and related stressors, including mood or behavior changes, loss of motivation, grief, anxiety, social challenges, bullying, relationship issues, and academic pressures. You may refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or by contacting your school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.
Schools Build Belonging so Students Can Thrive
What does belonging look like in our schools? In this inspiring video, you’ll see how Fairfax County public schools are creating inclusive, supportive environments where every student feels known, valued, and connected — the second goal of the Strategic Plan. From mentoring to cross-grade collaboration, these stories show that when students feel safe and supported, they can truly thrive — academically, socially, and emotionally.
