A Great First Week!

It is nice to have our students back in the building.  They have settled in quickly and are forging relationships with teachers and peers.  We look forward to parents and caregivers learning more from teachers about the year ahead at Back to School Night on September 4.

In this communication, we have links to all things that need signatures.  If you have not already, please take a moment to indicate your child’s Early Release Wednesday plan, sign the SR&R form in SIS ParentVue, and review and complete digital consent forms.

Be sure to reach out to the office (703-645-7000) or an administrator if we can assist with anything.

Please take a moment to share your plan.

Back to School Night is Sept. 4

This event is for preK-6 parents and caregivers, not children.  Please join your child’s teacher on September 4 at one of their 3 repeating sessions to learn about the grade level curriculum and how the classroom works:  6:00pm, 6:40pm or 7:05pm.  A short PTA and Administrator video will be shown at the beginning of session 1.

Cafeteria Share Table

FCPS is now requiring that each cafeteria have a share table where students can put unopened items or whole fruits that can be taken by other students who may still be hungry.  This will help reduce waste since unwanted items cannot be returned to the cafeteria line.  The most common items appearing on the share table are from the cafeteria line and include cheese sticks, yogurt, packaged peanut butter and jelly, cheez-it crackers, and milk.  Please discuss with your child whether he/she should visit the share table.  Any unclaimed items will be moved to our food pantry.

Student Cell Phones and Smart Watches

Please remind your child that FCPS is phone-free. For elementary school students, this means:

  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Cell phones and personal devices (airpods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).

Fall Academic Screeners

Each Fall, most students in preK through 6th grade particpate in academic screeners.  Please see below for a description.  Additional information is available at https://www.fcps.edu/academic-screening-growth-and-diagnostic-tests

Primary grade levels PreK-2

Students in grades PreK-2 participate in literacy screeners required by the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA). Mathematics screeners fulfill a Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) requirement for grades PreK-K and fulfill a FCPS Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) requirement for grades 1-2.

Upper elementary and middle school grade levels 3-8

Reading screeners and additional diagnostics fulfill Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) requirements. Mathematics screeners fulfill FCPS Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) requirements. Screening tests at these grades also serve as growth assessments to fulfill Virginia Assessment Program (VAP) requirements.

  • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Math is used in fall, winter, and spring with all students scheduled to take a spring SOL test
  • iReady Reading is used in fall, winter, and spring with all students scheduled to take a spring SOL test
  • Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) is required for select students each window.
    • In fall, VALLSS is used with grade 3 students new to Virginia public schools and students whose past spring VALLSS scores showed a need for support. Fall VALLSS is also used with grade 4-8 students who failed their past spring SOL Reading test or had read-aloud/audio testing accommodations on the SOL Reading test.
    • In winter, VALLSS is used with grade 3 students whose fall VALLSS scores showed a need for support. Winter VALLSS is also used with the grade 4-8 students who were identified to take the fall VALLSS test based on a failing SOL Reading test.
    • In spring, VALLSS is again used with grade 3 students whose fall VALLSS scores showed a need for support. No spring VALLSS test is available for students in grades 4-8.
