Dear Island Creek Families,

The first week was a tremendous success, and it's all thanks to you. Your efforts in preparing your children to come to school ready to learn make a huge difference, and it's a joy to see our students so enthusiastic about being back in the classroom.

Thank you for entrusting the Island Creek staff with your children. We are truly honored to be a part of their educational journey.

As we look ahead, we're excited to welcome our preschool students who are accessing ECCB on Monday. We also look forward to seeing parents and guardians at our Back to School Night on Wednesday evening.

Warmly,

Jen Fallert, Principal

Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS

At Island Creek, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.

Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.

These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.

Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.

We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intention is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported by every person they encounter at school.

As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.

How to Register as a Volunteer

  1. Review FCPS Volunteer Guidelines – All volunteers must read the FCPS Volunteer Protocols before getting started.
  2. Register in the FCPS Volunteer Portal
  • Select “Schools”
  • Search for Island Creek
  • Sign up for available opportunities (You can register as a general volunteer to start).
  • Choose Your Volunteer Level – We recommend registering as Level 2 now, so you can attend field trips with your child/ren.

For full details, visit the Volunteer FCPS website or contact Island Creek's Volunteer Point of Contact, Ms. Kathleen Black (knblack@fcps.edu)

Filed Trip Chaperones are considered Level 2 volunteers and must register to volunteer.

a

Bus Loop: The bus loop is closed to all family vehicles during arrival and dismissal. Please do not park or wait in this area. It closes specifically at 3:00 PM each afternoon.

Kiss & Ride: Use Door 2. For safety, students must enter and exit the vehicle on the passenger side.

Walkers: Please use Door 1. This includes families who park nearby and walk to meet their children.

Bus & Van Riders: Use Door 7.

Kindergarten & Preschool Students: These students must be met at school or the bus stop by a parent, guardian, or an authorized daycare provider who is at least 13 years old.

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for Island Creek and FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to conduct emergency drills, including lockdown drills, annually. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

By law, the first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during drills. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

💻Digital Resource Consent

Some FCPS-approved digital resources require parent/caregiver consent before they can be used by students. Find the list of resources which require consent on the Digital Resources - Parent Consent page.  This page also includes directions for providing permission.

Each digital resource used in FCPS has had an instructional and technical review. Information about the educational technology tools approved for use within FCPS can be found in the online Digital Ecosystem Library. Parents can find more information about FCPS-approved digital resources on the Digital Resources in FCPS webpage.

🍴 Apply Today for Free and Reduced Price Meals!

According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals receive breakfast and lunch at school at no cost.

Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits. Access the application and view criteria on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage

Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

Lunch with your Child(ren)

To ensure school staff have time to teach and reinforce cafeteria routines and procedures, we will be delaying the visitation of family members during lunch until Monday, September 15.

Help Your Child Navigate the Lunch Line

Help your child get through the lunch line quickly and have more time to eat:

  • Teach your child their student ID number to receive meals at school.
  • Sign up for and add money to MySchoolBucks to purchase meals at school.
  • Apply for free and reduced-price meals. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should submit a new application as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

If your child has any food allergies, learn how to submit accommodations for dietary restrictions and allergens

Access menus for breakfast, lunch, and other school meals, as well as allergen and nutrition information.

🔍 See Where Your Child Goes Online With Lightspeed

Parents can access their child’s activity on FCPS devices through Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service. Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited.

The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Updated Special Education and 504 Handbook

The Department of Special Services has updated and translated key resources to help our families of students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and/or Section 504 Plan.

These resources help family and staff understand procedures, rights, and processes. Find additional information on Special Education Instruction and the Family Academy: Resources to Support Special Education and 504 Plans pages.
