Our 70th celebration is right around the corner. This is an event to bring the community together at the start of the year. We are planning for Root Beer Floats in the cafeteria and a Sock Hop in the gym. We hope your family will join.
We are seeking volunteers to help with our Soda Station portion of our 70th celebration and Sock Hop. If you are able to volunteer on September 4th please let us know here.

At Wakefield Forest, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students. Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.
These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.
We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS, click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.
Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.
If you think you might want to chaperone a field trip this year, you must sign up as a Level 3 volunteer which takes some time. Please click on "Volunteer FCPS" above to get started as soon as possible.
As a reminder, all volunteers are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.
Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.
If your student’s bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Please contact the Transportation Office at 703-446-2050 with any additional questions. For concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact the FCPS Office of Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.
Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive email messages about bus delays.

Today we hosted a schoolwide assembly to introduce the Schoolwide House system. Our goal is to increase students and staff sense of belonging and increase positive partnership between grade levels. Our 6th grade will continue to have a unique opportunity to engage with Houses at a deeper level all year.
Our House system was developed by our 6th grade team and incorporates the characteristics from the Positivity Project character education program we teach. Classes will be able to earn House tickets which will be tracked and shared monthly.
The morning of Early Release Wednesdays we will have special House events to connect our sixth graders with the younger students.
During the big reveal students learned that grades 1-5 were sorted into the following houses and kindergarten will be connected to all 5 Houses.
Kindergarten - All Houses (White)
First Grade - Ubuntu (Red)
Second Grade - Volare (Green)
Third Grade - Leopaux (Purple)
Fourth Grade - Aquila (Yellow)
Fifth Grade - Sciomar (Navy)
Sixth Grade - Divided into one of the 5 Houses
We are making big plans for our 70th anniversary, to create a calm space and to enhance options for our teacher lounges. Thank you to the many families who have already donated.
If you are able to support us with donations, we would appreciate it. See items here.

This year, you will notice your child bringing homework assignments. While we’ve previously taken a “no-homework” approach, we are introducing at-home tasks to support our students in building lifelong academic habits and giving families a simple window into the learning happening at school. Teachers will share more about what homework will look like at their grade level at Back to School Night on September 17th.
What to expect:
- Assignments will be manageable and connected to classroom work
- Daily reading will be encouraged at all grade levels
- Completion and effort may be reflected in the Life, Work, and Citizenship Skills: Completes Assignments on Time
- Homework should not feel stressful or overwhelming. It’s meant to help your child grow. If you ever have concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher.
Wakefield Forest ES is turning 70 in September. We plan to have some fun events for our students to celebrate that week. The evening celebration and sock hop is open to the whole community.

- Decades spirit day
- Time capsule
- 70th Celebration/Sock Hop-Thursday, September 4th
Do you want to volunteer to help support any of these events? Email Principal Prindle at sbprindle@fcps.edu.
We're looking for someone who could take an aerial photo of the full student body. If you can help, contact sbprindle@fcps.edu

Each year the school provides names of two parent volunteers, along with staff members, to serve on a committee to review challenged materials. When instructional materials are challenged, names will be randomly selected to review the content.
If you are willing to serve on this committee please email Principal Prindle at sbprindle@fcps.edu.
These are our designated Early Release Wednesdays for the 2025-26 school year. Please plan ahead for childcare on these dates, as staff will be participating in professional development and planning for instruction.

This past June, students received a Summer Reading Log. If students read at least five books over the summer, they can return the completed log with a family member signature by Friday, August 29th. Students who participate have the chance to win a $5 gift certificate to our WFES fall book fair. Two students will be randomly chosen from each class.
Would you like to be part of the WFES Green Team? We will have our first meeting Monday, September 8th from 3:30-4:30. All students, parents and guardians are welcome.
Our mission is to encourage student driven environmental stewardship through hands-on activities in our school and community. These activities might include reducing waste, conserving energy, planting and maintaining wildlife habitats or tending to gardens. Students must be accompanied by an adult. Questions?
