Greetings Irving Families!
We had an outstanding Open House on Wednesday with over 900 families visiting during the afternoon. It was nice to see so many families walking through our halls, catching up with friends and neighbors and meeting our teachers. Thank you! for filling out the back-to-school forms and helping us ensure that we have the most up-to-date information for each student as we start the school year.
As we prepare for Monday, a reminder to please pack your patience and follow staff member's directions, if you will be using our Kiss and Ride. We ask for all drivers to have phones down while navigating the parking lot. Pictured above is an ariel overview of our school and parking lot. Please note that we do not permit cars to drop off in our bus loop. If your child is a bus rider, we highly recommend that they ride the bus. If your child is a walker or bike rider, please remind them that must use the cross walks, especially while moving through the parking lot. Thank you for helping us ensure everyone arrives safely to school each day!
Take Care!
Cindy Conley
Principal
Arrival and Dismissal from School
Students will be permitted into the school building beginning at 7:00 am. Students arriving between 7:00 am-7:10 am, are asked to wait in the cafeteria until the 7:10 am bell rings.
Bus Riders
As bus drivers learn the routes for the year, please have your child arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled pick-up time, for the first 2 weeks of school. Due to space limitations, bus passes will not be provided to students who wish to ride home with a friend.
We Are a Phone-Free School!
Please remind your student that cell phones and personal devices (airpods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell). Cell phones are also not permitted to be used as an instructional tool. Irving Middle School uses Yondr Pouches for students to store their cell phones and personal devices from 7:30 am - 2:15 pm. If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call our front office at 703-912-4500. Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone policy, which helps students stay focused, safe, and engaged at school.
Student ID Numbers Needed for School Meals (New This Year)
Starting this school year, students will enter their student ID number — not their current cafeteria PIN — at the cash register to receive school meals. Please remind your child of their student ID number, which you can find in SIS ParentVUE. View more updates and reminders for school meals this year.
🍴 Apply Today for Free and Reduced Price Meals!
According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals receive breakfast and lunch at school at no cost.
Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits. Access the application and view criteria on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage
Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
Library News
Irving’s Summer READ! The program continues for rising 7th and 8th graders. Remember that you have until 11:59 pm on Sunday, August 17th, to log the titles of the books you’ve read this summer. So far, we have 104 entries. The more books you read, and the more titles you report into the Google form, the more chances you have to win one of four $25 Barnes and Noble gift cards. Plus, you’ll learn a lot and get pulled into some intricate, compelling storylines.
Here’s a link to the Summer READ! Choice Board, with twenty-four different reading ideas.
Here’s the link to the Google Form through which you report what you’ve read.
We look forward to seeing our 8th grade students again, and welcoming incoming 7th graders. Come to the Irving Library, early and often!

🏗️ School Bond Referendum on Ballot Tuesday, November 4
A $460 million School Bond Referendum will be on the Tuesday, November 4, general election ballot.
Bond-funded projects provide safe, welcoming, effective, and modern spaces for students to learn and staff to work.
The building and renovation of our schools is not funded through FCPS’ operating budget. Voter-approved bonds that allow payment for projects over time, while seeking to avoid an increase in property tax rates, fund building and renovation. Without bond funding, renovations would likely cease, delaying much needed repairs at many schools. Potential bond-funded projects are identified in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program, which was adopted by the School Board in February.
Voters have a direct role in shaping the future of FCPS schools. Read more about the 2025 Bond Referendum. Learn more about registering to vote.
