We are having a great first day here at Mt Vernon Woods! Our Panthers are busy learning routines, making friends and getting to know their teachers. We are so excited to see what our students learn this week!
As a friendly reminder, beginning tomorrow morning, parents will not be permitted to walk their child to class, unless it is your child's first day of school. Please be prepared to say goodbye at the door.
Sincerely,
Gina O'Neal, Principal
Christine Berry, Assistant Principal
Kevin Heron, Assistant Principal

Transportation
- Please be patient with the transportation schedule as some needed adjustments are made during the first week of school.
- Those students eligible to ride the school bus will receive a letter indicating their bus stop and time.
- Please report to the bus stop at least five minutes prior to the listed time.
- Students are required to board and depart the bus at the assigned stop to prevent overcrowding on buses. Any changes require permission from the office.
- If you require a change in transportation, such as riding a different bus or meeting a parent at Kiss-N-Ride, please send a note to your child’s teacher on the morning of the change. If a student is visiting a friend, both students must bring permission notes from their parents.
- In order to ensure that your child arrives home safely, all bus changes need to be made by noon that day.
Arrival Procedures
To ensure safety for our students, we ask parents to remember the following:
- Doors open at 8:20 am. Students should not arrive before 8:20am.
- For the first days of school, staff members will assist children in finding their classrooms.
- As a safety measure, we ask that all Kiss-N-Ride students be dropped off at Entrance #5.
- If you arrive after 8:35 am and the Kiss-N-Ride has closed, please park your car, and walk your students to the main office.
- Students arriving between 8:30-8:35am should report directly to their classroom and will be marked tardy. Students arriving after 8:35 am will report directly to the office to receive a tardy pass.
- When escorting your child into the building, please use the crosswalk.
- After the first days of schools, families are not allowed to walk their students to class in order to prevent disruptions to classroom routines.
Dismissal Procedures
Dismissal begins at 3:15PM. We implement a staggered dismissal beginning with Kiss and Ride students, then walking students by grade level. Kindergarteners must be met by an adult either at the school door if they are walkers or at the bus stop if they are bus riders.
Families are asked to call the school (703) 619-2800 before 2:30pm to let the office know a student is going home a different way. If a student has a different plan for going home (other than their normal routine) they must have a note signed by the parents/guardians and given to the teacher. Students will not be allowed to call parents to make changes. If there is no note, the student will follow their normal routine for going home.
If parents need to pick up their children prior to dismissal, they need to do so BEFORE 2:30pm. After 2:30pm, parents will need to wait for the 3:15 dismissal. This will cut down on students missing valuable information at the end of the day as well as the confusion caused by escorted students traveling to and from the office.
Kiss and Ride
If you will be picking your student up from school on a regular basis you will need a Kiss and Ride number. The first week of school, staff will be out at Kiss and Ride prior to dismissal to distribute numbers and paperwork. If you are unable to get a Kiss and Ride number during dismissal, please call the office and we will send home a number and paperwork with your student. Students leaving in the same car will all have the same Kiss and Ride number. Please help your child memorize their number to support a quick dismissal. Please remain in your car during Kiss and Ride. Staff will escort your child to the car and open the door for them.
