2025-2026 School Year Information
Oakton High School Back to School Information is now available! This information was emailed out on Tuesday, July 29. It is also easily available to you on the Oakton HS website.
Please be sure to review this information at a time convenient for you. We want to ensure everyone is ready for a successful start to the school year. We hope to see you at our upcoming Back to School events.
General Information
Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Updates for 2025-26 School Year
At their May 8 meeting, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the SR&R, including its cell phone policy. Other SR&R updates include added clarity and/or procedures around topics such as discipline data, parent notifications, hate speech, and integrated discipline training. The full list of changes is available on Boarddocs.
We Are a Phone-Free School!
Please remind your student that cell phones and personal devices (air pods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) can no longer be used during passing periods. Phones and personal devices must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell; 8:10am-2:55pm) with the exception of lunch time in designated lunch spaces (cafeteria and cafeteria courtyard). Cell phones are also not permitted to be used as an instructional tool.
If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call our front office at (703) 319-2701. Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone policy, which helps students stay focused, safe, and engaged at school.
An email was sent on August 11, 2025 outlining the entire policy for this school year.
Student ID Numbers Needed for School Meals (New This Year)
Starting this school year, students will enter their student ID number — not their current cafeteria PIN — at the cash register to receive school meals. Please remind your child of their student ID number, which you can find in SIS ParentVUE. View more updates and reminders for school meals this year.
Student Parking Permit Update
This year we had more applicants than we had available parking spots, therefore we had to implement a lottery system for the passes. Students who did not receive a pass in the first round were notified via phone by Ms. Coaquira. If you did receive a parking pass, please remember that you must clear all of your fines and fees before you can purchase the pass. Email notices concerning fines and fees were sent on Monday of this week. Any student who received a parking pass can pay for it and pick it up at Cougar Kickoff. If they will not be in attendance at Cougar Kick Off they can pick it up the morning of the first day of school in the security office. Any permit that is not paid for by the end of the day on Friday August 22 will be forfeited and re-assigned to someone on the wait list.
Summer Reading- Strongly Encouraged
This summer, all Oakton students are encouraged to find a book that they enjoy reading. Here is a list of age appropriate books from the American Library Association for inspiration, but students may choose any book that fits their interests. Here are some ways that you can enjoy your book over the summer:
- Read by the pool or at the beach
- Discuss a book with your friends in a book club
- Read on a plane or in the car to pass the time
- Enjoy an audiobook
When we return to the school in August, we look forward to discussing these books and their connection to Oakton’s core values of community, integrity and respect in both Cougar Connect and English classes.
🍽️ Summer Meals for Students
FCPS’ Summer Meal Service Program provides breakfast and lunch free of charge to all children aged 18 and younger. Check FCPS’ Food and Nutrition Services webpage and the USDA Summer Meals for Kids Site Finder for specific dates, times, and locations. If you have any questions regarding the Summer 2025 meal service, please email SummerMeals@fcps.edu or call 703-813-4800.
🩹 Required Immunizations for Rising 12th Graders
Additional immunizations are required for students entering 12th grade:
- All students entering 12th grade are to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the beginning of school.
- To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 16 or older.
Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and health care providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.
Additional resources are available on the FCPS Immunization Resources webpage and the Fairfax County Health Department.
Updated immunization records can be submitted to Oakton HS in the following ways:
-
Starting July 25: Upload the updated immunization records to ParentVue. (The Online Verification Update form is currently down for end of year processing.)
- Here are directions for how to upload documentation to ParentVue.
- If you do not have access to ParentVue, you may drop off a hard copy of the immunization records for us to upload.
Please note that these records require an individual staff member to update student records after they are received. I apologize for any frustration or confusion caused by the continuation of emails from FCPS regarding immunizations in the time between submission and when the records are updated in our system.
SAVE THE DATE
We are in full swing planning for next school year. Please see the graphics below to note some important dates over the summer and back-to-school events.
This information can also be found on the Oakton HS website, under Announcements - Save the Date.

Class Schedule Change Requests
We have finalized our schedule for the upcoming school year. Students and families across FCPS will have access to student schedules in StudentVue/ParentVue on Thursday, August 14, at 6:00am.
Our staffing decisions and the number of courses offered are based on the classes students selected during the registration period last school year. To maintain the best possible program for our students and one that is most responsive to their educational needs, schedule changes will be limited to space available.
Timeline for Schedule Changes
- August 1-7: Schedules will be adjusted if there is a school error or summer school adjustment needed.
-
August 8-September 5: School counselors will make requested schedule changes based on space availability
-
September 8-November 7 (end of 1st quarter grading window): No schedule changes
-
After November 10: Any student requesting a schedule change will need to fill out the schedule change request form, with permission from parent, student, teacher, school counselor, and administrator. If approved by the administration, schedule changes will only be processed if there is space available.
-
After March 27: There will not be any schedule changes, regardless of space availability. This date aligns with the last day of the 3rd Quarter.
For any questions you may have, contact your child’s school counselor.
