Dear Wonderful Navy Community,
It has been an honor to open the school year at Navy ES. Your support in preparing our Navy Stars for success is unparalleled and deeply appreciated. Our Navy Stars were ready and excited for the first day of school—thank you for Making It Happen!
I’d like to highlight some key updates at Navy ES this year, including: Advanced Math in grades 3–6, an Algebra pilot in grade 6, Kiss and Ride updates to support efficiency and flow, Social and Emotional Learning lessons connected to Portrait of a Graduate (POG) for grades K–6 each week, installation of charging stations for 1st- and 2nd-grade laptops (in progress), monthly parent coffees and advisory meetings to problem-solve, share resources, and gather feedback for continuous school improvement, quarterly student panels to elevate student voices, a student ambassador program to foster leadership, consistent grade-level communication through collaboratively developed newsletters, and instructional coaching and resource support for all teachers to build capacity for continued learning and growth.
Additionally, we’re proud to share that Navy is becoming a Purple Star School. Purple Star Schools are designated public or charter schools committed to supporting the unique educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families. The program, championed by the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC)), provides a framework for states to recognize schools that implement specific resources and services to help students navigate transitions, social challenges, and academic continuity. This includes staff training, student-led programs, digital resources for families, and recognition events for military service.
Have a fabulous weekend!
With gratitude, Your Joyous Admin Team Jason, Kim, and Sarah
Please review this checklist to make sure you've completed all of the forms.
There are three major places we need parents to update/fill out information
1️⃣ SIS ParentVUE -
2️⃣ Parent Digital Consent System (PDC) - Login
- Access the PDC using your SIS ParentVue login information.
- Please review the required and optional forms.
-
Required: 📢 Digital Consent: Teachers will use a variety of digital resources to help students learn during the current school year. These digital resources have been checked and approved by Fairfax County Public Schools. Please provide your consent for your student to use these resources through the Parent Digital Consent System.
3️⃣ Three Hour Early Release
- We must collect every students early release plan. Please fill out the Google Form, indicating your plans. Although responses can also be tracked in the PDC, there are limitations and we are not using it to track Navy's Early Release plans. Reminder, students should only stay late on these days if there is a child care hardship.

Thank you for your support in making our Kiss and Ride process more efficient, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. We couldn’t have done it without your full support! Please remember that our Kiss and Ride doors close at 8:50 a.m. If you arrive after that time, you will need to check your child in at the front office. Thanks for Making It Happen!
Below is the recording of the Zoom session held last night for parents about Algebra I Honors. Attached you will also find the Q&A document. Please share this information with any parent who requests the video.

Hispanic Heritage Month will be celebrated from September 15 to October 15 to recognize the contributions and culture of Hispanic communities. At our school, the Spanish teachers will prepare special activities to honor this celebration.
At Navy, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.
Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.
These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.
We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS, click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.
Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.
We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.
As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.
Help your child get through the lunch line quickly and have more time to eat:
- Teach your child their student ID number to receive meals at school.
- Sign up for and add money to MySchoolBucks to purchase meals at school.
-
Apply for free and reduced-price meals. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should submit a new application as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
If your child has any food allergies, learn how to submit accommodations for dietary restrictions and allergens.
Access menus for breakfast, lunch, and other school meals, as well as allergen and nutrition information.
Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.
If your student’s bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Please contact the Transportation Office at [phone number] with any additional questions. For concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact the FCPS Office of Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.
Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive email messages about bus delays.
Parents can access their child’s activity on FCPS devices through Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service. Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited.
The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.
Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.
Please remind your child that FCPS is phone-free! For elementary school students, this means:
- Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
- Cell phones and personal devices (airpods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).
If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our main office at (703) 262-7100. Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone and personal device policy.

Friday, August 29, and Monday, September 1, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends.
