Dear Dogwood Families,

Welcome back to another exciting school year at Dogwood Elementary! We hope you enjoyed a wonderful summer filled with fun, rest, and time with family and friends. We are thrilled to open our doors once again and can’t wait to see our students’ smiling faces as we kick off a year full of learning, growth, and new adventures together.

We invite you to join us for our Open House on Friday, August 15th—a perfect opportunity for students to meet their teachers, see their classrooms, and start getting ready for the school year ahead.

  • Kindergarten, PAC, and ECCB: 1:00 – 2:30 PM
  • Grades 1–6: 1:30 – 2:30 PM
  • PreK: Will have a separate Open House the following week.

The first day of school is Monday, August 18th. Doors open at 8:35 AM and pick-up will be at 3:35 PM. Students who are walkers will meet on the blacktop at the back of the school.

To help with those special first-day moments:

  • Kindergarten parents are welcome to walk their child to class each morning during the first week.
  • 1st grade parents are welcome to walk their child in on the first day only.
If you are walking your child to school, please use Door 5 at the back of the building.

A quick reminder: For our youngest bus riders, Kindergarten students must be met by an adult at the bus stop.

We are so excited to begin this school year with our incredible Dogwood Dragons. Thank you for being such an important part of our school community. Together, we will make this year one to remember!

We look forward to seeing you!

Principal Beckner

Title I Parents Right to Know

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Your child attends a school receiving federal Title I grant funds under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015. As part of the federal guidelines for Title I, your child’s school has specific expectations for student performance and teacher qualifications. You can find information on how your child’s school is meeting these expectations by viewing http://schoolquality.virginia.gov/.  To access your school’s profile, type the school name in the search field. If you would like a paper copy of this profile, please call your child’s school.

ESSA allows parents in schools receiving Title I grant funds to ask for information about state and local policies regarding student participation in required tests and about parents’ rights to refuse testing for their children.  Information about required tests at each grade level can be located at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/student-tests-assessments/grade-level-tests. Information about parents’ rights related to testing can be located at https://www.fcps.edu/node/34277.

Additionally, ESSA allows parents in schools receiving Title I grant funds to ask for certain information about their children’s teachers. Parents may ask for the teacher’s:

  • College and graduate school preparation, including degrees and major fields of study for each degree;
  • Licensure status, including subject and grade level endorsements, and whether those licenses meet the requirements for teachers of their child’s subject or grade level.

Parents may also ask for information about the qualifications of any instructional assistants who provide services to their children.

If you would like to receive any of this information about your child’s teacher or instructional assistant, please write to the FCPS Human Resources Licensure Office at the address below. For your request to be fulfilled, you must include: your child’s full name, the name of your child’s school, and the name of the teacher or instructional assistant about whom you would like information.

            Human Resources Licensure Office

More information about the Title I grant in FCPS can be found at   https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/performance-and-accountability/title-i, including details about teacher quality in schools receiving Title I grant funds (found under the “High Quality Staff” link). If you have questions about how the Title I grant supports your child’s school, please contact the school’s administration.

Student ID Numbers Needed for School Meals

Student ID Numbers Needed for School Meals (New This Year)

Starting this school year, students will enter their student ID number — not their current cafeteria PIN — at the cash register to receive school meals. Please remind your child of their student ID number, which you can find in SIS ParentVUE. View more updates and reminders for school meals this year.

 Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE

☑️Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Contact our registrar at [email/phone number] if you need an activation code. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.

Update Your Contact Information

Be sure you receive important information! Update your phone number(s) and/or email address(es) in the Parent/Guardian section of SIS ParentVUE.

Update Immunizations and Records

Immunizations are required for all students to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy.

When your child is immunized, remember to request a copy of their immunization record and bring that to our front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible. Find more information on FCPS’ website.

Bookmark the School Year Calendar

Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:

  • Days marked with a blue “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.
  • Days marked with an orange “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings, if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days.
  • Days marked in pink are holidays for students but working days for teachers and staff.
