Dear Edison Community:
My name is Abena Aidoo Hewton, and I am honored to serve as this year’s Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) president, at Edison High School. This year serves as my fourth year at Edison, as I am a proud parent of our daughter, Zoey, who is a senior - a fact that continues to amaze me because it feels like only yesterday, when she started at Edison.
One of my non-PTSA duties is as an Associate Professor in the Tourism and Events Management program at George Mason University.
Prior to this role as president, I had the opportunity to serve through the PTAs of other schools, as a fundraising chair and secretary, and I also served as the VP of Communications for our own Edison PTSA (about three years ago).
For me, being a part of the PTSA is something I deem very important because it is an important vessel to amplify the voices of Edison’s parents, teachers, and students (I can say that our students being a part of our organization is one of the things I love about our PTSA). Another reason I love our PTSA is all the support we provide to our Edison Community members, through grants, scholarships, events, and many others.
However, if there is one thing I have learned from my involvement with PTAs/PTSAs through the years, it is that we can only be successful when everyone chips in! The way we can continue to do well is by each of Us becoming a member of the PTSA, volunteering, and participating in our meetings and events.
So, this is my big ask of You, Edison Community: Will you please join us, so that together we can continue to serve our Community, and make it the best environment for all? I really hope your answer is ‘Yes,’ and that you will look out for ways to be a part of what the PTSA is doing. I look forward to working with all of you, this year.
I wish, Everyone, a Wonderful Year!
GO EAGLES!!!
