Kings Park Families,
This week we are thrilled to welcome back our incredible staff, the architects of learning who help every student write their own stories of discovery, growth and success.
We are counting down the days until we welcome our students back and can’t wait to connect with families during our Books and Bubbles and Open House events later this week. These gatherings are the perfect first pages in our shared story - a chance to meet, dream and build the year ahead together. *see details below

Early Release Wednesday Afterschool Care
Action Needed
On Early Release Wednesdays, afterschool care will be available when that works best for families. To OPT IN to afterschool care, parents/guardians must complete the Early Release Wednesday Childcare Consent Form in the Digital Consent Application (found under “Early Release Wednesday”).
-
The deadline to OPT IN for afterschool care is August 25th.
-
The form defaults to early dismissal and must be completed to request afterschool care.
-
Any changes after September 1st should be communicated directly to the school.
If you need help using the Digital Consent Application, check out the Digital Consent Directions for Families.
Thank you for helping us confirm childcare needs so we can keep students safe and dismissal smooth on Early Release Wednesdays.
Books and Bubbles - Wednesday, August 13th, 2:45pm-3:30pm
Books and Bubbles is almost here! Students will meet teachers and classmates through a fun activity, enjoy bubbles and book-themed treats, and play outside. Preschoolers will meet near the gym, K–1 on the playground, and 2–3 on the blacktop. *Guardians must attend; building access will be unavailable. **In case of inclement weather, the event will be canceled. Due to construction, we are unable to pivot indoors.

Open House - Friday, August 15th, 8:45am-9:30am
Join us this Friday, August 15th, from 8:45am-9:30am for our Kings Park Open House. Open House is a time for students and families (Preschool - 3rd grade) to informally meet their teacher and to explore the classroom. We encourage families to enter the building and practice walking to class the same way their students will each day. Please see this map for coordinated entrances.
First Day of School - Monday, August 18th
We are excited to welcome our lions back to school on Monday, August 18th. Doors open at 8:30am. School begins at 8:40am and dismissal begins at 3:20pm. During the first week of school, guardians may walk students to their classroom door.
Kings Park’s tradition of the Boo Hoo and Wahoo Welcome will continue in the cafeteria from 8:30am-9:00am on the first day of school. Preschool through Third Grade guardians are invited to enjoy coffee and connect with Mrs. Lin, Mrs. Burke, and Mrs. Kaplan.
FCPS parents are invited to share their favorite pictures or videos from the first day of school on social media using the hashtag #FirstDayFairfax. Follow FCPS on social media to see photos and videos throughout the school year!
Back-to-School Checklist
Please review this checklist to make sure you and your child are ready to start the school year!
☑️ Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE
Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Contact Kings Park’s registrar, Nancy Sawicki, at nesawicki@fcps.edu/703-426-7002 if you need an activation code. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.
☑️ Update Your Contact Information
Be sure you receive important information! Update your phone number(s) and/or email address(es) in the Parent/Guardian section of SIS ParentVUE.
☑️ Update Immunizations and Records
Immunizations are required for all students to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy.
When your child is immunized, remember to request a copy of their immunization record and bring that to our front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible. Find more information on FCPS’ website.
☑️ Learn About School Meals
Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meal benefits.
☑️ Bookmark the School Year Calendar
Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:
- Days marked with a blue “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.
- Days marked with an orange “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings, if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days.
- Days marked in pink are holidays for students but working days for teachers and staff.
Please note that some holidays and observances, such as Eid al Fitr, may shift, and the calendar may be adjusted.
New Volunteer Program - Volunter FCPS
A new volunteer management system, Volunteer FCPS, will allow students, parents/caregivers, and community members to register and search volunteer opportunities within the school division.
All volunteers (new or returning) will register in Volunteer FCPS, complete a volunteer orientation, and be required to sign in using the visitor kiosk. Some volunteers will also be required to undergo a background check. Visit the Volunteer FCPS website for details. Contact volunteer@fcps.edu with any questions.
