Centreville Students, Families, and Community,
We continue to get ready to welcome students back on August 18. Last week I shared information about the new cell phone policy across all FCPS high schools. This week, I’d like to share information about the weapons detection system.
As part of the ongoing commitment to strengthening layered safety and security programs, Fairfax County Public Schools will continue to phase in a weapons detection system at all secondary schools this fall.
Please watch this video of the Superintendent’s conversation with students about the weapons screening system. The most important thing is to be sure that students have the right items removed from their bag before getting in line.
Items to be removed include:
- Three-ring binders
- Laptops
- Collapsible umbrellas
- Metal lunch boxes
- Metal pencil cases
- Metal glass cases
These items can remain in a student’s bags:
- Non-metal lunch boxes
- Books
- Planners
- Spiral notebooks and folders
- Cell phones
- Keys
- Non-metal pencil cases
Once the items are removed, students should walk to the shortest line and proceed. If the light turns red, they will be directed to a secondary screening to determine what may have alerted the system. Experience shows that the process becomes easier and more efficient every day. If you have additional questions, you can submit them online to the FCPS Chief of Safety and Security Office.

August 14 - Freshmen & New Student Orientation 8:30AM-10:30AM: Centreville High School will welcome the Class of 2029 and newly enrolled students at orientation on Thursday, August 14th. Students will learn about CVHS routines, walk their schedule to meet their teachers, and hear from Wildcat Ambassadors about what to expect from high school. The program will run from 8:30-10:30 at CVHS. Transportation will be provided from Bull Run, Centre Ridge, Centreville, Colin Powell and Union Mill elementary schools. Buses will depart at 8:00 am and return at 10:45 to the elementary schools.
August 14 - Wildcat Welcome - 5:00PM-7:00PM: Centreville High School hosts this annual back-to-school kick-off each year. We invite students and families to come on out to enjoy music provided by the marching band, learn about extra-curricular activities here at CVHS, purchase spirit wear, and grab a bite at the food trucks. This is a fantastic opportunity to reconnect as a community and kick off the 2025–26 school year together!
August 18 - First Day of School: We are excited to welcome our students back on Monday, August 18. Students will begin their day in ROAR, which is our Advisory Period. Students will be provided a paper copy of their schedule, since they will not be allowed to access their cell phones, and will be provided critical information about school operations and expectations.
Schedule Change Procedure Changes: A letter was sent to all families via email in February with the updated procedures for schedule changes for the 2025-26 school year. A summary of the timeline is provided below:
Apply Today for Free and Reduced Price Meals! - Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits. Access the application and view criteria on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage
Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
Support Your Child’s Success by Checking SIS ParentVUE - Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Parents/caregivers should receive an activation code when they register their child. Contact the school registrar, Emiley Slebrch, if you need a code.
Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. You may also access SIS ParentVUE using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Back-to-School Immunization Requirements - Make sure your child has all of their required immunizations before the first day of school. Check their immunization records to see what they might be missing. You can:
- Request immunization records online through the Virginia Immunization Information System (a free service).
- Get records from other states’ systems if your child was immunized outside of Virginia.
- Request records from your health care provider. Some may charge for copies.
Review school-required immunizations to verify that your child is up to date.
Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders
Several immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grades.
- All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations before the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria, the Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
- To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age seven or older.
- To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
- Parents/guardians may choose for their child to not receive the HPV vaccination. Documentation is not required to opt out of the HPV vaccination.
- All students entering 12th grade are required to receive one dose of the MenACWY vaccine before the beginning of school.
- To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 16 or older.
As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.
Where to Receive Immunizations
If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your family’s health care provider or one of the following clinics:
FCHD offers limited walk-in hours for immunization services on a first-come first served basis. Immunizations are also available by appointment.
- Inova Cares Back to School Pediatric Health Fairs provide children ages 5 and up with free school physicals and immunizations. Weekday and weekend clinics are available in July and August. These health fairs are for VA Medicaid or Uninsured Inova registered patients only. Appointments are required. Call 703-698-2550 to make an appointment. Bring vaccine records to the appointment.

Request PSAT and SAT School Day Testing Accommodations and Multilingual Support - FCPS high schools will give the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) to 10th and 11th graders on Wednesday, October 8. That same day, 12th-graders will participate in SAT School Day.
Because these exams are operated by the College Board, students do not automatically receive testing accommodations or multilingual support. Families can view Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about College Board accommodations on the FCPS website.
If you have a student with disabilities in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade this school year, please review the accommodations request process and return forms to the high school by Monday, August 4.
If you have a multilingual learner (ML) in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade this school year, please review the ML support request process and return forms by Thursday, August 28, if you wish to request ML support for the October 2025 PSAT/NMSQT or SAT School Day.

Secondary Grading Updates - There will be new secondary grading policies in 2025-26. The goal of these changes is to increase consistency and clarity of grading practices. Learn about middle and high school grading policy updates.
¡Solicite Hoy sus Comidas Gratuitas y a Precio Reducido! - Las familias deben completar la Solicitud de Comidas Gratuitas y a Precio Reducido antes del comienzo de cada año escolar. Las solicitudes aprobadas podrían calificar para recibir beneficios estudiantiles adicionales. Solicit Comodidades y Apoyo Multilingüe para los Días Escolares de los Exámenes PSAT y SAT - Las escuelas secundarias de FCPS efectuarán el examen “PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test” (NMSQT) para estudiantes de 10mo. y 11vo. Grados el miércoles 8 de octubre. Ese mismo día, los estudiantes de 12vo grado tomarán el examen “SAT School Day”.
