summer learning

We are off and running Halley community!  Our hive has been busy this summer hosting several different programs to include summer school for our preschool students, Summer STEAM for students in grades 1st thru 5th, and Summer SACC.

Major kudos to our custodial staff and office staff who have worked diligently to prepare our building for the 25-26 school year!  Our school will be ready and eager to host all of our Hornets within the next few weeks.

Exciting News:

Dr. Hanna Langstein has been selected as Halley's next assistant principal!  Dr. Langstein supported the Halley community for the last two months of the 2024-2025 school year and built strong relationships with staff and students during her interim position.  We are pleased to officially welcome her to the Halley administrative team!

Dr. Langstein joins the Halley community after serving as an assistant principal at Annandale High School, where she was a transformational leader dedicated to fostering equity, student success, and a collaborative school culture.

As an assistant principal at Annandale High School, Dr. Langstein supported the development of their multi-tiered systems of support for attendance and mentored new administrators. Her instructional leadership supported teams in planning challenging academic tasks and creating scaffolds that support all students in accessing higher-level thinking. Prior to her arrival at Annandale, Dr. Langstein worked in the Centreville pyramid, having been a middle and high school social studies and ESOL teacher, ESOL department chair, on-time graduation resource teacher, and MTSS co-lead.

Dr. Langstein holds a Bachelor's in History and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from William & Mary. She also holds a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech.

Mrs. Kayleigh Merritt has been on maternity leave since May lovingly attending to her beautiful baby boy.  She will return as Halley's other assistant principal in early September.  Until her arrival, Mr. Keith Hirsch (a true friend of Halley ES) will serve as our interim assistant principal.  Mr. Hirsch is a retired assistant principal who served the FCPS Region 4 community for over 20 years.  Welcome back Mr. Hirsch!

We look forward to a wonderful year that is sure to bring lasting memories and strong relationships.

Please review the remaining sections of our newsletter for important back to school information.

Purposeful Attendance Everyday!

We love our Halley students and want to see them at school everyday!

Missed Days=Missed Learning

We request each Halley family become purposeful regarding attendance for their child.  Please plan family trips, medical appointments, and speical events during the built in breaks of the FCPS calendar.

Attendance impacts school accreditation status.  Help our community, and "bee" purposeful with attendance.

Support Your Child’s Success by Checking SIS ParentVUE

Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Parents/caregivers should receive an activation code when they register their child. Contact the school registrar, Jessi Padua at jpadua@fcps.edu, if you need a code.

Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. You may also access SIS ParentVUE using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Need help creating an account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.

🍴 Apply Today for Free and Reduced Price Meals!

According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals receive breakfast and lunch at school at no cost.

Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits. Access the application and view criteria on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage

Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
