Cherry Run News August 1st

Dear Cherry Run Elementary School Community,

I hope you’re continuing to enjoy a relaxing and fun-filled summer! We are eagerly looking forward to welcoming all of our Cardinals back to Cherry Run in just a few short weeks.

We have an important update regarding our upcoming Back to School Night. Due to the Special Election scheduled for Tuesday, September 9th, we will be adjusting the date and format of the event.

Back to School Night will now take place on Thursday, September 4th, for all families and grade levels. To help families with more than one child attend multiple classroom presentations, the evening will be divided into two identical sessions.

Back to School Night – Thursday, September 4th | 6:30–8:05 p.m.

This evening provides a valuable opportunity for parents and caregivers to learn about grade-level curriculum, classroom routines, schoolwide expectations, and more.

  • Session 1: 6:30–7:15 p.m. (Grades K–6)
  • Session 2: 7:20–8:05 p.m. (Grades K–6 – repeat of Session 1)

We appreciate your flexibility with this change and are excited to welcome you into the building for a night of connection and collaboration. It’s a great chance to meet our incredible staff, explore classrooms, and learn more about the exciting year ahead.

Keep an eye out for updates from our wonderful PTA—they have some great back-to-school events planned in the coming weeks!

Warmly,
Maura Donahue, Principal

🩹 Back-to-School Immunization Requirements

Make sure your child has all of their required immunizations before the first day of school. Check their immunization records to see what they might be missing. You can:

  1. Request immunization records online through the Virginia Immunization Information System (a free service).
  2. Get records from other states’ systems if your child was immunized outside of Virginia.
  3. Request records from your health care provider. Some may charge for copies.

Review school-required immunizations to verify that your child is up to date.

Support Your Child’s Success by Checking SIS ParentVUE

Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Parents/caregivers should receive an activation code when they register their child. Contact the school registrar Yasmin Naldo ymnaldo@fcps.edu if you need a code.

Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. You may also access SIS ParentVUE using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Need help creating an account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE

Summer Meals for Students

FCPS’ Summer Meal Service Program provides breakfast and lunch free of charge to all children aged 18 and younger. Check FCPS’ Food and Nutrition Services webpage and the USDA Summer Meals for Kids Site Finder for specific dates, times, and locations. If you have any questions regarding the Summer 2025 meal service, please email summermeals@fcps.edu or call 703-813-4800.

Apply Today for Free and Reduced Price Meals

According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals receive breakfast and lunch at school at no cost.

Families must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits. Access the application and view criteria on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage

Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
