Dear Bush Hill Families,
What a joy it was to welcome our students back to the building for the first day of the new school year yesterday! The halls were buzzing with excitement, and it was wonderful to see our students' smiling faces again after the summer break.
We are so proud of how well our students remembered and followed our school's routines and expectations. Their cooperation made for a smooth and successful start to the year. We are truly looking forward to a fantastic year of learning and growth together!
As we settle into our daily rhythm, please help us keep everyone safe by remembering a few key procedures:
-
Student Drop-Off: After the first day of school, please drop your student off at the designated building entrances. For the safety of all students, families should no longer walk their children to classrooms. If you need to enter the building for any reason, please do so at Door 1 and follow our Visitor Protocols.
-
Kiss n' Ride and Walking/Biking Safety: For the safety of all our children and community members, it is crucial that everyone follows our established procedures. Please do not park across the street on Westchester Street and walk your children across. To keep traffic flowing and our neighbors happy, please do not turn around in driveways or make U-turns on Westchester. Always ensure you are not blocking intersections, fire hydrants, or walking paths.
-
Speeding up Dismissal: To help us get students to their cars as quickly as possible, please be sure your student knows their unique Kiss n' Ride number. If you need a number, please call the Main Office at 703-924-5600, and we will be happy to provide one for you.
Detailed information about our arrival and dismissal procedures are available here. Thank you for your partnership in making our school a safe and positive environment for everyone.
Sincerely,
Mary E. Duffy
Principal

Opt In/Opt Out for Early Release Wednesday Childcare
While we anticipate that most students will be dismissed 12:55 PM on limited early release Wednesdays, we recognize that some families may require childcare. These students will be supervised by instructional staff. No new instruction will take place, as after-school care is strictly supervision.
Elementary school parents and caregivers should log in to the Parent Digital Consent system to review and provide consent to a variety of resources and services including Early Release Wednesday Childcare.
- OPT IN if you require childcare on our limited early release Wednesdays.
- OPT OUT if your child will go home (or to childcare arranged with SACC or another provider) at the early release time.
Families need to make their selection in the Parent Digital Consent system by Monday, August 25, to receive care for all early release Wednesdays. If a family needs to change their selection, they should notify our front office one week in advance.

Families can easily grant permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. Opt your child in or out of online educational tools and choose how student information is managed. You may also opt in or opt out of after-school care on early release Wednesdays; read more below.
Visit FCPS’ Parent Digital Consent webpage to access the system. Watch this video to see how to use the tool.
School Bus Transportation
Thank you for your patience as we all get used to the new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following kiss-and-ride procedures and being understanding while waiting for your children’s buses to arrive.
If a bus is delayed, parents and caregivers may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce bus delays of 30 minutes or more. Visit the Transportation Services webpage to find out who to contact with specific questions.
Be sure to update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive emails about bus delays.
Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!
The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Watch this video with tips from Fairfax Pyramid principals and visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.
Holiday
Labor Day Friday, August 29, and Monday, September 1, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. See the complete school year calendar.
