Atoms Athletics 2024-2025 Recap
FALL SEASON
Cheer worked hard everyday to show their school spirit every friday night but they also worked hard to have a great performance at the National District Cheer Championships. Day 1 of the meet was an awesome as the Atoms held a sixth place spot heading into day 2. THe Atoms put on an incredible performance but fell just short of qualifying for the region meet. The Atoms look excited to get back on the sideline in 2025.
Boys and Girls Cross Country continued to bring out runners this year with many of them achieving their personal best times in multiple races. The Atoms may not have had a dominant runner this year but their team mindset within both programs was great to watch. The Atoms ran with passion and desire to be better with each race. The girls were led by several seniors including the Nagle twins and Angela Salazar who have been key runners in the program but leave it with many young runners poised to showcase their talents. The boys program were led by multiple runners throughout the season and their team finish in the district championship meet to qualify for the region championship meet. The Atoms graduate several seniors that were instrumental in the success in 2024 but return some strong runners including Dosen, Uzokoff, among others to build upon the success.
Dance was an energetic season for the crew as they had a large turnout of dancers this year and had a blast. The gave their best performances every Friday and throughout the winter season as they showcased their skills for the community. The Atoms competed in the Brooke Point Invitational that saw the team finish in 7th place and several dancers earning medals. The Atoms lose several seniors including leader Madison Mueller and Calleigh Widjaja but are excited to lace it up for fall 2025!
Girls Volleyball had their best season since before COVID. The Atoms won multiple district games this year, highlighted by a dominating 3-0 wins over perennial district powerhouses Edison and Justice. The Atoms showed grit and energy all season that included a three game winning streak that helped propel the Atoms to a sixth place finish in the district. The placement helped the Atoms qualify for the Occoquan Region Tournament and a date with Woodson. The Atoms gave the Cavaliers all they could handle in the match but fell short in their upset attempt. The Atoms were led by first team all district setter Sarah Murphy and second team member Miah Henderson. The Atoms lose three key seniors but return several young players in Esther Jung, Kiley Foster, and the Moreland sisters to go with others that look to keep the Atoms competitive in 2025 and beyond!
Boys Volleyball had a season to remember in their first year of existence. What started out as, “what will this look like turned?” into memories that will carry on forever in Atoms Boys Volleyball. It was a balanced season of wins and losses for the Atoms that saw the Atoms win 3 of their final four games to secure the number four seed in the district tournament and a home first round game. The Atoms took care of business defeating Falls Church to lock up a region tournament spot. However, the Atoms were not done yet, as they took down number one seed Hayfield in the semifinals to punch their ticket to the district championship vs TJ and a home region game. The Atoms fell short in the district championship to TJ in an epic five set thriller but hosted Madison in the first round of the region tournament. The Atoms once again showed why they were a force this year as they beat the Warhawks 3-1 to move on and face McLean. The Highlanders were too much for the Atoms to bring their season to an end. The Atoms have a lot to be proud of. The Atoms lose several seniors including first team all district player Logan Noyes but return second team district players Jairo Castillo Cardona and Andrew Banks to a team of young hungry players looking forward to 2025!
Football took to the field this year with new faces across multiple positions to start the season. The Atoms may have graduated 40 plus seniors over the last two years but their grit and perseverance were on display early against a schedule that by seasons end saw four teams with a combined record of 29-11. The Atoms played tough against Falls Church but a perfected play in the last minute of the game by FC resulted in a heart breaker. The Atoms took care of business vs Justice and Lewis on the back half of the schedule to notch their first two wins of the year. The Atoms honored their seniors in their final game of the season vs Rock Ridge but were unable to hold the Phoenix off in the final minutes. The Atoms showed drastic improvement from game one to game ten and were led by several new players this year including senior first team all district and region running back and kick returner Carlos Alvarez. The Atoms lose other keys position players including QB Noah Lenn, RB Osman Conteh, Bryan Sob, and OL Noel Sanchez. However, they return some tough players including Pascual Aguilar-Rodriguez, Ioannis Prionas, and Adnan Abdul-Haqq among others to a team poised to breakout.
Atoms Golf continued to grow from 2023 as the Atoms had their largest roster in some time with 17 golfers teeing it up this year. The Atoms showed great improvement and skill development as it led them to three team wins in 2024. The Atoms had multiple golfers score personal best scores led by sophomore Carter Demers with a career low 37 in a match. The girls were paced by junior girls zone qualifier Sophia Sewall and her personal best round of 38. The Atoms qualified three golfers (Carter Demers, Cole Cardwell, & Quinn Mongold) for the Occoquan Region Championships at Twin Lakes while Sophia qualified for the Girls Region Zone Qualifier. The Atoms graduate two seniors but return six golfers who saw a lot of time on the course this year. The future continues to look bright for the Atoms golf team.
Field Hockey had another banner year, literally as the Atoms won their second National District Championship in three years. Atoms rolled their way to a 13-4 record, undefeated in regular season National District play, and the number one seed in the district tournament. The Atoms rolled through the tournament winning all three games by a combined score of 13-0 on their way to the National District Championship and the number one seed in the Occoquan Regional Tournament. The last two years saw the Atoms season come to an end vs Robinson but this year would not hold the same result. The Atoms battled throughout the game to win 2-1 and advance to the region semifinals. The Atoms took on Woodson but couldn't overcome a couple early goals by the Cavaliers to bring their season to an end. The Atoms graduate several seniors including first team all district selection Ripley Hotaling and second teamer Anna Pemberton but return first teamers Lilly Flores and Sofia Saavedra to go along with National District and Occoquan Region Player of the Year Callia Uviedo. The Atoms look ready to hang a third banner in 2025!
WINTER SEASON
Boys Basketball had the old saying of, "it's not how you start but how you finish." The team had an up and down first half of the season where they stood at 4-7 after a January 17 date with Edison, in which the Eagles could do no wrong in the game. After that game, it was different story as the Atoms hit the road to Philadelphia the next day and came back to Annandale with a win and from there, the Atoms started to roll. They won 10 of their final 12 games of the season, including a revenge game win over Edison to secure the number three seed in the district tournament. First round saw the Atoms roll over the Wolves of Justice and set up a rematch with Edison. The semifinal game was an exciting one but saw the Eagles prevail setting up a first round region game vs West Springfield. Missing a couple key players and a few with some injuries proved to be too much as the Spartans won a thrilling game in overtime to bring the Atoms season to an end. The Atoms had several all district representatives including first team all district and second team all region player Nathan Pewett who will be back for his senior season next year with electric player Jeremiah Nelson. They lose several all district players in Nat Aklilu and Noah Lenn but the Atoms have a core group of younger players ready to make the jump to the spotlight.
Girls Basketball played hard and gritty all year after losing their best two players from last years team. The Atoms battled hard game in and game out and were competitive for many of their games. The Atoms started the season off with a win over Gar-Field. The Atoms would get back in the win column over the winter break in a Holiday Tournament at Mount Vernon. After losing round one vs Marshall, the Atoms came back strong in day 2 and 3 of the tournament, getting wins over Forest Park and Gar-Field to finish 5th place! The lone district win of the season came a week later vs Lewis but unfortunately fell short in a few games to get a second win. They played the number one seed Hayfield in the district tournament, who closed the Atoms out to bring the season to a close. The Atoms lose three seniors this year but return all district honorable mention player Megan Murray and a few core players like Fatmata Musa and the Tilly sisters to a program that looks to continue its growth for 25-26.
Gymnastics might have had a small team but they were mighty this year with a couple of the gymnasts battling injuries throughout. The Atoms worked hard everyday to improve their skills and it showed as they continued to earn personal scores with each meet. All four gymnasts are underclassman and return next year including two time region qualifier Kate Hanlen.
Indoor Track welcomed many newcomers to the team and saw personal best and personal records set during multiple meets throughout the season. The girls team is were paced by many underclassman but had several seniors who were great leaders and leave the team in a great hands. The boys team had a few region qualifiers and were highlighted by junior Jeremiah Nelson and his state runner up finish in the high jump who will return for his senior season looking to claim a state championship.
Girls Wrestling completed a successful inaugural season with as many as 14 girls competing during the season. Several wrestlers won multiple matches during tournaments this year. The Atoms were led by Darling Saravia who won her weight class at the Luchadore Tournament at Lewis in January and followed that up as she became the first ever girls District Champion for Annandale in February at the National District Championships. The Atoms look to grow the program in their second year and welcome any newcomers to pair along with Darling and region representative Anatolia Jenson.
Boys Wrestling completed one of their best seasons since pre-COVID as they finished with a team record of 12-12. The Atoms had several wrestlers who won multiple matches across their tournaments and enjoyed success during their annual Morgantown trip. The Atoms improved throughout the season and were highlighted by multiple region qualifiers including district champion Isaac Readinger and runner up Jordy Lopez-Funes. Jordy would go on to the region meet and finish fourth to qualify for the VHSL state championship where he would finish 12th. The Atoms lose a strong senior class led by district champion Isaac Readinger and state representative Jordy Lopez Funes but have already started workouts to get the youth of the program up and running for 2025-26.
Swim/Dive had another successful season. The Atoms showed their swimming abilities, winning several of their meets throughout the season. The Atoms had multiple region qualifiers for both boys and girls team. Noah Popp (200 IM) and James Chilton (50 Free) led the Atoms in the district championship meet in their respective events. During the 200 Freestyle Relay, James Chilton qualified for the state meet with his split time. At the Occoquan Region meet, the 200IM Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay teams set NEW school records on their way to qualifying for the state meet and join James (who was a member of both relay teams). All three had successful state meets, qualifying for the B Final of each event. The 200 Freestyle Relay (Noah Popp, James Chilton, Rickey Nguyen, and Finn Sample) Re-broke their school record on the final swim of some of their high school careers. The boys lose several strong swimmers in Popp, Nguyen, and Sample but return members of the school record teams of Chilton and Connor Uzokoff while the girls return an all district, region, and state representative swimmer in Melanie Decareau.
SPRING SEASON
The JV Baseball team welcome many new faces to the program that showed great growth and development throughout the season. Varsity had to replace some key positions with new players to the roster this season and took a few weeks to get on track. March was a cold month for the weather and bats of the Atoms as they struggled out of the gate. However, the month changed to April and the Atoms won three of their next five heading into spring break. Unfortunately, the break cooled the bats again until late in the season that saw the Atoms beat Lewis and then upset perennial power Edison to vault into the 6 seed in the district tournament and secure a region berth. The Atoms were bounced by Lake Braddock in the region tournament. The Atoms lose second team all district player Noah Lenn but return two players with huge potential in Noah Plank and Andrew McGee among others.
Softball had tremendous success and growth this year. The JV team had a packed roster and completed their season with a 5-5-1 record! Varsity played a competitive schedule and came out of the gate hot, winning four of their first five district games. The Atoms cooled off but played tough throughout the district, falling short in several games that one bounced could have resulted in a different outcome. The Atoms finished fifth in the district and qualified for the region tournament. Robinson ousted the Atoms in the region tournament. The Atoms lose All district pitcher and one of the all time leaders in strikeouts in Annandale history, Teagan Scott Daniels and CF Cadence Ayers but return a core of all district players in Sophia Sewall, Riya Vlcan, Kellyn Doherty, and Frieda Lamar to the 2026 roster.
Boys Lacrosse continues to move in the right direction and play with grit and determination every game. The JV Atoms showed growth and development throughout the season despite having many players playing for the first time. They play with great spirit and are fun to watch. The Atoms started off with a dominating win over Osbourn but faced a brutal schedule of Marshall, South Lakes, and district power Hayfield in consecutive games. The Atoms went on to Beat Lewis and Nova Lions and fell just short of qualifying for the regions with a last minute loss to Mt. Vernon in the last game of the season. The Atoms fell in the first round of the district tournament. The Atoms lose all district players Daniel McClendon and Jason Perloff among others but return some pivotal players in Jack Barnes, Samy Cheikh, and Jonathan Trejo-Cruz as they look to continue the momentum into 2026.
Girls Lacrosse had their largest turnout for tryouts in some time with almost 50 girls in attendance. The Atoms may not have had the year they were hoping for in terms of results but they were a gritty team to watch. The JV team had a blast playing and learning the game everyday and continued to get better with each passing event. The Varsity Atoms played with resiliency and never backed down from any opponent. The Atoms capped their season off with a huge district win 15-10 over Mt. Vernon. Unfortunately, the Atoms were ousted in the tournament to end their season. The Atoms graduate all district players Anna Pemberton and Ripley Hotaling but welcome back District selections Emily Field and Louise Fitzgerald among others for 2026.
Girls Soccer had another successful season completing it with a 9-3-1 record that started off 1-2 against a schedule that included state contender Meridian, and northern Region powers Washington-Liberty and Westfield. After that start the Atoms ripped off 7 straight wins including an impressive 5 game streak of shutouts! The Atoms beat Mt. Vernon in the last game to secure the number two seed in the district tournament. The Atoms pounced on Lewis 7-1 but fell to Hayfield 1-0 after a late goal was disallowed. The Atoms beat Fairfax in the first round of the region tournament but fel to Robinson last night 2-0 to bring their season to a close. The Atoms lose All district players in Sara Nagle and Erin Hanlen but hold onto a young crop of players including Melanie Decareau, Lily Rumpf, Anna Crittenden, among others who looked poised to make another run next season
Boys soccer had a great run this season, completing a 7-3-1 record that included a win over one of the best teams in the Northern Region in Westfield. The Atoms played a tough district schedule in which every team can beat each other but the Atoms came through on the other side with a 5-1-1 record and securing the two seed in the district tournament. The Atoms won a controversial game vs Mt. Vernon in the first round but fell to Falls Church in the semis securing the three seed in the Region tournament. The Atoms battled Woodson in the region tournament but fell in OT to bring their season to a close. The Atoms lost 16 seniors from the team including all district selections of Marcus and Dominic Cortes, Matthew Hendrickson and Tyson Perkins among others but return a solid core of underclassmen and a talented JV team as they look to regroup and prepare for the 26 season.
Boys Tennis had a youth movement this year as the team had one senior. The Atoms showed resiliency throughout and played hard ultimately securing a region berth after a dominating late season win over Mt. Vernon. The Atoms took on a tough Fairfax team who brought the Atoms season to a close. The youth is there with newcomer Andrew Banks leading a core of young energetic and determined Atoms next season, but lose leader Leo Marzigliano to graduation.
