Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

As we bring this school year to a close, I want to provide a brief update regarding our STEAM program at Canterbury Woods for next year.  The budget shortfall in FCPS has required all schools to make some difficult staffing and budget decisions. All FCPS elementary schools are required to maintain certain vital positions (advanced academics resource teacher and special education department chair) despite the reduction in staffing. This significantly reduced flexibility in school budgets to fund programs and services that are not required by the state. Unfortunately, for us at CWES, that means not being able to maintain the STEAM program that we have had over the past eight years.

Please know that I deeply value the enriching opportunities STEAM provides our students and the incredible impact it has on their learning and creativity. Although we are not able to maintain a dedicated STEAM position for the upcoming school year, I am exploring creative ways to integrate STEAM learning into our schedule using the resources available to us.

My goal is to continue offering meaningful and engaging experiences for students, and I look forward to sharing more details with you once plans are finalized in August. I want to thank you for your support, partnership, and advocacy. It is your engagement and care that make Canterbury Woods such a strong and vibrant community.

As we wrap up the school year, I also want to take a moment to celebrate what an incredible year it has been. Our students have grown academically, socially, and emotionally—and have brought joy, curiosity, and energy into our classrooms each day. It has truly been a privilege to watch them learn and thrive. On behalf of the entire Canterbury Woods staff, we wish you and your families a relaxing, fun-filled summer. This will be our final newsletter for the school year, but please be on the lookout for updates and information in late July as we prepare for another great year together!

Have a fantastic summer,

Leslie Malkowski, Kristi McGeehan, and Mindy Milliron
