Listen to the Universe, Listen to Your Heart: Advice from a Revered Mount Vernon Alumnus

man speaking to another person in a seated interview

Tony Perkins, co-anchor of the local NBC News4 Today program, is one of the most influential alumni of Mount Vernon High School. He was the first Black editor-in-chief of the school’s student newspaper. During his time at Mount Vernon, he found his voice and became more comfortable with an audience.

In 2024, Perkins was inducted into the FCPS Alumni Hall of Fame by Educate Fairfax, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports Fairfax County Public Schools students. He sat down with Mount Vernon senior Maverick to talk about his time at Mount Vernon and his career path, and to offer some advice for high school students.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Updates for 2025-26 School Year

At their May 8 meeting, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the SR&R, including its cell phone policy. Other SR&R updates include added clarity and/or procedures around topics such as discipline data, parent notifications, hate speech, and integrated discipline training. The full list of changes is available on Boarddocs.

Cell Phone Policy Update for High Schools

Beginning in August, high school students can only use their cell phones and other personal devices (AirPods, smart watches, etc.) during lunch and before or after school. This is a change from FCPS’ current cell phone policy, which allows high schoolers to use devices during passing periods. Next school year, students must keep devices off and away during classroom time and during passing periods between classes.
