New Korean Immersion Program at Halley ES!

Korean Immersion Program Survey QR Code

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I would like to request your participation in a brief survey, which is available here or through this QR code.

FCPS is considering the establishment of an optional Korean immersion program at Halley ES in Fairfax Station, which would be open to all FCPS students through a lottery process. If approved, this would be the first language immersion program in the South County HS pyramid (and the first language immersion program to be established by FCPS since 2013).

Students participating in the Korean immersion program would follow the same curriculum as other FCPS students, but they would learn some content in Korean. Specifically, students would learn math, science and health in Korean, and they would learn English language arts and social studies in English.

Dual language immersion programs offer numerous benefits:

  • Students develop greater cognitive flexibility, to include improved attention control, memory, and problem-solving skills.
  • Language immersion programs produce higher academic outcomes for all students, to include ESOL students, low-income students, and students with special education needs.
  • Navigating two languages strengthens executive functioning skills like attention control, task switching, and working memory, which are crucial for academic success and overall development.
  • Students develop proficiency in both languages, gaining the ability to speak, read, write, and translate effectively.
  • Students would learn about different cultures, promoting empathy, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for diverse perspectives and practices.
  • The ability to speak and understand multiple languages is a valuable asset in today's globalized world, making students better prepared for future careers and leadership roles.

FCPS is seeking your input to determine whether to establish this Korean immersion program. If approved, it would begin with kindergarten at Halley ES in Fall 2026, adding one grade per year over the next 7 years. Over time, new programming would be added at South County MS and South County HS to enable a continued program through 12th Grade.
