The Greatest Show in Kindergarten
Last Monday, the Lane gym became a giant circus tent with a center ring that hosted acrobats, clowns, daring bikers, jugglers, and more as kindergarten put on its annual Kindergarten Circus. Take a look at all of the acts below!

Once a Lane Lion, Always a Lane Lion!
Today, former Lane Lions from the graduating class of 2025 returned to walk the halls of their elementary school one more time. Participating high schools included not only nearby Hayfield and Edison, but also some from a little further afield, like Woodson and West Springfield. Current students and staff greeted them with cheers and applause across the building. Mrs. Schadle, one of the few staff members still at Lane from when these grads started kindergarten, took a moment to pose with the group, which included her own daughter!

As always, the library does not have fees for overdue books; however, families are expected to pay the replacement cost for books that are lost or returned damaged.
Thank you for supporting the library! Contact Mrs. Chozick, Librarian, at schozick@fcps.edu with questions.
Medication Reminder: Pick Up Medication in the Health Room by the Last Day of School

Save the Dates for Summer and Back-to-School Events!
We have started planning some community events for the summer and the school year ahead! Please be sure to put these events on your calendars if you’d like to attend.
-
Open House: NEW DATE COMING SOON!
- Due to a change in FCPS policy, we will likely need to change the date of Open House from August 14. Please stay tuned for updates. We will let families know the date and time as soon as it is confirmed.
- Whatever the date, the plan for the event remains the same! Students and their families are invited to come to school to see their classrooms, meet their teachers, and reconnect with Lane friends. In order to manage our capacity for this popular event, we will divide our school community into three groups, by student last name. (If you have children with different last names, your family may choose a session based on any of the names.) Times coming soon!
- PTA First Day Coffee: Monday, August 18, 9:20 – 10:30 a.m.
- Back-to-School Night: Tuesday, August 26, 6 – 8 p.m.
More details about these and other events will be sent out in the weeks ahead.

End-of-Year Schoolwide Events and Engagement Survey – We Want to Hear from You!
It's hard to believe the 2024-2025 school year is nearly over! We've accomplished so much this year, and we really enjoyed the time we got to spend learning and celebrating together. As we start planning for the upcoming year, we want to make sure that we are offering families the opportunities they enjoy and need to build connections and community.
We offered A LOT of opportunities this year, and we'd love to have your feedback. Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey about this year's events and other opportunities sponsored by both the school and the PTA. And, please, give us ideas and suggestions for future opportunities. Thank you!
Limited Early Release Days Continue Next Year
During a report to the School Board last month, FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid announced plans to continue limited early release days in elementary schools and shift them to Wednesdays for the 2025-26 school year. This plan is based on recommendations from the Early Release Steering Committee. The committee includes parents, caregivers, school-based staff, and central office personnel. Read more about the reasons for early release and the proposed early release dates.
New Lane PreK Program for Eligible Families for 2025-26 School Year
Our school will be gaining a grade level next year with the addition of our first PreK program for 4-year-olds from families who meet specific criteria.
Your family may qualify for PreK or Early Head Start if you:
- have a child who will be age 3 or 4 by September 30,
- receive free or reduced-price school meals, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Social Security Income, and/or are homeless per definition of the McKinney Vento Act, or
- receive resources such as from a shelter and/or the FCPS homeless liaison office.
Though families may qualify, spaces are limited and selection is based on need, not “first come, first served,” with PreK priority given to 4-year-olds.
If you would like to apply for this program, visit the FCPS website: https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/registration/early-childhood/prek-and-early-head-start-application.
Note: The application eligibility, selection, and enrollment process is managed centrally at the Office of Early Childhood Curriculum and Grant Management located in Falls Church, not at schools. If you have a question about the application process or status please call the main English Line: 703-208-7900 or Spanish Line: 703-208-7901.

Parent Resources
Learning Doesn’t Take a Vacation — and Neither Does Fun!
To support continued student learning over the summer, FCPS has created a Summer Learning webpage for families of students currently in Grades K–6. The webpage includes optional, grade-level digital activities in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies that align with what students have learned during the school year. It offers ideas and strategies for families to keep students curious until August. Summer is the perfect time to help your student explore new interests, reinforce concepts, and stay engaged!
If your student needs a device for the summer, please contact the school to arrange for the device to be checked out. Devices must be returned by July 30, 2025.
Families can access tech support at the Families: Tools and Technology page.
Language Arts Summer Learning: Magazines, Weekly Plans, Activities, and More
We will be sending students home with two Benchmark magazines to help them practice their reading and writing skills during the summer. You will also receive a letter from our school with weekly learning plans and activities.
Find more ways to support your child's literacy skills on FCPS’ Summer Learning Resources webpage. All of these activities are optional, but we encourage families to help their students practice reading and writing during summer break, so that they can start strong next school year.
Summer Resources Help Students Stay Curious, Healthy, and Busy
FCPS’ Summer Resource Guide has activities and tips on a variety of subjects and interests from camps to health and safety resources. Be sure to check back over the summer, as more resources may be added.
Free Virtual Mental Health Consultations for Parents and Secondary Students
This summer, the FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer free virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from June 23 through August 1. Any FCPS parent, or middle or high school student, will have an opportunity to schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. Learn more in the latest Healthy Minds blog.
Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders
Additional immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grades:
- All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations before the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
- To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age seven or older.
- To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
- As a parent/guardian, you may decide not to have your child receive the HPV vaccination. If that is the case, the school does not require documentation.
- All students entering 12th grade are to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) before the beginning of school.
- To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 16 or older.
Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and health care providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time.
Local immunization clinics and additional resources are available on the FCPS Immunization Resources webpage and from the Fairfax County Health Department.
