A Note from Mrs. Goddin...

Hello MUES Families,

The last day of school is inching closer and summer is in the air! The past two days at MUES have been filled with some much excitement. On Thursday, Ms. Smith and Ms. Luck hosted a fun-filled Field Day where students participated in a variety of team building activities. A big thank you to both Ms. Smith and Ms. Luck for organizing this day for our Mustangs. I would also like to thank our specialists team and so many parent volunteers for helping to run the games and stations that our Mustangs participated in.

We also welcomed our rising third grade students to MUES as they toured their new school and got to meet many teachers and staff members who will work with them when the new school year begins in late August. The highlight of our day on Thursday was when we welcomed back to the Mustang community our graduating seniors who spent their elementary years at McNair. Some have moved onto other high schools to include a move to Manassas, yet they chose to come back and spend their afternoon with us. Once a Mustang, Always a Mustang!

Today brought more entertainment as we cheered on many of our Mustangs who performed in our first-ever MUES Talent Show. The acts that our students  and even some staff members performed were amazing! MUES definitely has talent!

A big thank you to Ms. Scott for spearheading this event, which quickly became one of our favorite events of the year. We hope to make this an annual MUES tradition like our March Madness Staff vs. 6th Grade Student Basketball Game. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the specialists team for supporting Ms. Scott's vision for this event.  As we celebrate our final three days of the school year, don't forget that we have a few more dress up days.

Here are next week's themes:

  • Monday, June 9th: Surfer or Skater Day- Dress like a surfer or skater.
  • Tuesday, June 10th: Somewhere on a Beach- Wear your favorite summer outfit and bring a beach towel or beach blanket!
  • Wednesday, June 11th: End of the School Year Blues- Wear your McNair spirit wear or blue/white to celebrate the last day of the 24-25 school year!

Don't forget that the McNair PTA's "Movie Under the Stars" is happening this evening. Arrival begins at 7:00 PM with the movie starting after the sunset. Remember to bring your blankets, beach towels, or lawn chairs with you.

Even though rain is expected some this weekend, I hope that it is a wonderful one for everyone!

Sincerely,

Melissa Goddin

Your Proud Principal

Introducing: The McNair Upper Summer Bookmobile

book

Throughout the summer, McNair Upper staff and volunteers will visit three community sites and bring books for our Mustangs to borrow. We will visit each site weekly so that students can pick new books each week. Popsicles and other incentives will be provided for students who return their books and share what they read! Please see the attached flyer for more information.

Do you have a Middle or High School students who loves volunteering or needs service hours for graduation? Mrs. Janofsky would welcome volunteers to help with book distribution at each site. Interested students should email Mrs. Janofsky at mljanofsky@fcps.edu

✅ End-of-Year Reminders

The last day of school is Wednesday, June 11! Please see some important reminders below:

  1. Remind your child to return all school library books and FCPS laptops.
  2. Check your child’s MySchoolBucks account and pay any balances.
  3. Pick up any medications your child has been taking at school. A parent/guardian must pick them up in person.

Bookmark the 2025-26 school year calendar to be ready for next year. The first day of school is on Monday, August 18th!

End of the Year Medication Pick-Up

clinic

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. As a friendly reminder, the last day of school is Wednesday, June 11th. Students will be dismissed at 1:30 PM.

Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

🥗 Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance!

  • As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to remember to check your students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Families that earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2025-26 school year will be available this summer.

If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2024-25 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price meals.

Phase 2 Community Boundary Review Meetings

Families, staff, and community members can explore and visualize potential boundary scenarios using a customized Boundary Explorer Tool. The tool will be accessible from the FCPS website. You are also invited to participate in another series of community meetings in order to review and reflect on the initial draft scenarios before the start of summer break:

Each meeting will be hybrid, meaning that you may attend in person or via Zoom. Childcare for in-person participants and language interpretation/translation for all participants will be available as needed. Registration links will be shared soon. Another round of community meetings will be held in the fall.

Visit FCPS’ Comprehensive Boundary Review page for more information.

MUES Book Drive

books

Through the end of the school year, McNair Upper is collecting gently used, high interest children's’ books at all reading levels to support the new McNair Summer Bookmobile! We will visit several sites in the community throughout the summer to offer a free “little free library on wheels” for our students. Staff, students and families may drop off book donations in the designated box in the McNair Upper front office.

We are also seeking financial support to fund this project. If you know of a business that can provide monetary donations to support our students’ summer reading, please reach out to Mallory Janofsky at mljanofsky@fcps.edu for details.
