Principals' Message

Dear Freedom Hill Families,

Welcome to June! It is hard to believe that we only have eight days left in the school year.  Our students have worked so hard, and we couldn't be more proud of the growth and resilience they have demonstrated. As we wrap up these final two weeks, please be on the lookout for important end of year dates from your child's classroom teacher.

Last week, we had some special events happening in the building, with SCA Popsicle Sales, Battle of the Books, field trips, and, of course, our Senior Walk for our Marshall HS students! What a joy to see our former Eagles back in the building for a parade of honor. They will be graduating on Monday morning. Congratulations, Statesmen!

This week, the fun continues with another busy schedule, including Field Day on Friday. Please see the reminders below to help us make it a successful day. Thank you to all of the volunteers who have already signed up to support all of the outdoor excitement. Do you remember that we met our Read-A-Thon goal, and that a certain group of principals is going to be hit with water balloons...!?

Lastly, we are excited to announce that we will have a new office staff position next year - a Full-Time Family Liaison. We are looking to hire a candidate who has lots of passion for supporting our diverse community. Applications close on Tuesday at this link

As always, thank you for your continued support of all things Freedom Hill, and we wish you a wonderful week ahead!

In partnership,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Tim Scesney, Assistant Principal

Holly Sims, Assistant Principal

Field Day Volunteers Needed

Dear Parents,

This spring we are beginning to prepare for our annual fitness and field day. The theme is "Shining Bright". The event will take place on Friday, June 6th. All students in the school (PreK, Kindergarten through Sixth Grade) will be participating from 9:30-11:45am.

In order for the event to be successful, we need volunteers to assist in running the activities. Volunteers would need to arrive no later than 9:10am on the day of the event and stay until 11:50am to help with clean up.

If you can volunteer, please fill out the Sign-Up Genius form by Thursday, May 29th. You will receive your activity assignment and details about Field Day through email shortly before the event. On the actual Field Day, volunteers would need to sign in at the front office and then report to the gym. Please let us know if you have a particular station you would prefer to be assigned to, and we will do our best to accommodate you. Thanks!!!

💪 Let's Finish the School Year Strong!

Student attendance at school is important all year long, up to the last day of school. Attendance has an effect on student performance and on school accreditation. See how to:

  • Check your child’s attendance record.
  • Help your student stay engaged at school.
  • Report future absences.
  • Understand the FCPS school calendar.

Learn more about attendance resources.

Phase 2 Community Boundary Review Meetings

Families, staff, and community members will soon be able to explore and visualize potential boundary scenarios using a customized Boundary Explorer Tool. The tool will be accessible from the FCPS website. You are also invited to participate in another series of community meetings in order to review and reflect on the initial draft scenarios before the start of summer break:

Each meeting will be hybrid, meaning that you may attend in person or via Zoom. Childcare for in-person participants and language interpretation/translation for all participants will be available as needed. Registration links will be shared soon. Another round of community meetings will be held in the fall.

Visit FCPS’ Comprehensive Boundary Review page for more information.

School Board Adopts the FCPS 2025-26 Budget

The Fairfax County School Board unanimously adopted the FCPS Fiscal Year 2025-26 Approved Budget. Facing years of chronic underfunding, the final budget required $121 million in reductions to the needs-based budget that was carefully developed with the FCPS community’s high expectations in mind. While these cuts and reductions will impact our classes, the school division will continue to do what is necessary to provide a world-class education for every student. Read more about the budget in this news release.

Student Testing Results Coming Soon

Throughout May and June, you will receive your child’s spring assessment results. If you aren’t sure what assessments your child took this year, there is a list of tests by grade level on the FCPS website.

How the results are delivered depends on the test. Scores will be delivered in SIS ParentVUE or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about how test results are reported to families. Individual test websites provide report translations and help for interpreting test results. Please contact us with any testing questions or for additional information about how we use test results to support student success.

FCPS Cares: Recognize Our Staff Who Go Above and Beyond

f

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FHES employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the exceptional work happenings at Freedom Hill.

Caribbean American Heritage Month

ca

FCPS celebrates the rich diversity and honors the many contributions of immigrants of Caribbean heritage to our nation during the month of June. Caribbean individuals are some of the most ethnically diverse in the world. There are more than 8.5 million individuals in the United States born in the Caribbean or of Caribbean ancestry. Learn more about Caribbean American Heritage Month.

LGBTQIA+ Pride Month

lg

In the month of June, we recognize the resilience and determination of the many individuals who are fighting to live freely and authentically. We stand with those facing an ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice. This Pride Month, we reaffirm and uphold the dignity of LGBTQIA+ people. Each individual in our school community should feel valued for who they are. Visit our LGBTQIA+ Student Resources and Supports webpage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

Eid al-Adha

eid

Eid Mubarak to all who observe! Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of Sacrifice,” is the second of two main holidays celebrated in Islam. Muslims believe that Eid al-Adha signifies the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim, known as Abraham in Christianity and Judaism, to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as ordered by Allah. It focuses on sacrifice, the pilgrimage to Mecca and giving to those less fortunate. Eid al-Adha begins at sundown on Thursday, June 5th and continues on Friday June 6th.

PTA Updates

SAVE THE DATE - LAST PTA MEETING TUESDAY, JUNE 3rd

This Tuesday, June 3rd, at 6PM is our last PTA meeting of the school year.  We’ll be in-person in the library and you can plan to arrive a bit early to mingle with others and grab a light snack donated by our friends at The Silver Diner. We’ll vote on a summer spending budget, celebrate our wonderful volunteers, elect the 2025-2026 PTA Board, and several other exciting topics! If you can’t make it in-person, you can use this Zoom link.

NEW BOOK ALERT FROM OUR VERY OWN LIBRARY VOLUNTEER

Susan Whitehead, the long-time library volunteer (20 hours/week for over 10 years!) recently published a children’s book, Percy the Parrot: Best Class Pet Yet, and she slipped in a few Freedom Hill specifics especially for the kids (a hallway scene and a couple of references to teachers.) You may have spoken with her at our 75th anniversary last weekend.  She is graciously donating profits from book sales to the PTA because “I have so much fun working with everyone at Freedom Hill, and the children are just exceptional.”  You can purchase a copy on Amazon.

FIELD DAY - FREEZE POPS, PIZZA, AND ICE CREAM

On Friday, June 6th, the PTA will provide freeze-pops, Domino’s pizza*, and ice cream cups to students as part of Field Day. The cafeteria will be open for breakfast but closed for lunch. Families are asked to pack an alternative for lunch if they would like to decline the PTA lunch.

*Students in 6th grade will have a separate lunch on Field Day.

SUMMER PLAYDATES FOR RISING KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS

If you have a student starting Kindergarten at FHES this coming 2025-2026 school year, please plan to meet up with other Kindergarten families on the FHES playground on the following dates/times. This is a great way to make new friends (for both the parents and the students) and get to know future classmates!

  • July 29th, 6:15PM
  • August 5th, 6:15PM
  • August 16th, 10AM
