Message from Mr. Greata

This week, our school was bursting with energy as we welcomed our future Cavaliers for our Cavalier Cameo! We were proud to host the entire 8th grade class from Frost Middle School. After a quick class photo in the stadium, students participated in an engaging program where they learned about our sports teams, school activities, and clubs. A highlight of the day was our student panel, where current Cavaliers shared advice, tips, and tricks for navigating high school. It was a joy to meet our future students—we can’t wait to welcome them officially next year!

As we begin to wind down the school year and gear up for next week’s senior celebrations, I’m thrilled to share some outstanding academic news. We are seeing incredible results from our WIDA testing, which measures English proficiency. One of our school goals this year was to increase our WIDA progress score—and we did just that, with a 6.8% improvement! This success is thanks to the dedication of our EL teachers and administrators.

In addition, we are seeing unprecedented success across the board with our SOL scores. I look forward to sharing more detailed results in the coming weeks and into the summer.

Academic growth extends into our elective and career-prep programs as well. For example, James Cho launched our first-ever Fitness Instructor Honors course this year. At the end of the course, students took the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)- Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) exam for professional certification—and the class earned the highest pass rate of any FCPS CTE program certification assessment! Similarly, students are diving into hands-on career experiences, such as Christopher Vilorio, who recently began an internship with FCPS Food and Nutrition Services’ head chef, Timothy Jones. We wish him the best as he pursues a future in the culinary arts!

None of this success happens by accident. It is the result of intentional, collective work. While there are too many teachers and staff members to thank individually, I want to recognize our entire team for cultivating this culture of excellence.

We also want to celebrate our Carter G. Woodson Science Olympiad team for their incredible performance at the National Science Olympiad Tournament at the University of Nebraska. Out of 60 of the best teams in the country, our students placed 25th—and were awarded the coveted Spirit Award, which honors teams who exemplify positivity, teamwork, character, and citizenship. Congratulations to Ellen Babcock and all our student scholars, engineers, and scientists. What a phenomenal achievement!

A special shoutout to Audrey Kan, Shaheer Khan, Maia Kim, Sung-Joo Kim, Tyler Lim, Kristina Lundblad, and Elaina Wi for being accepted into Governor’s School - an extraordinary accomplishment!

This week, our students from Adapted Curriculum classes, Partnership class, and Unified Special Olympics team also participated in Field Day at Robinson High School, joining peers from across the region in inclusive games and activities. A heartfelt thank-you to Eileen Reap for her leadership and to Megan Pitts, Aki Goto, Emily Bankson, Rebecca Stroud, Jayme Cole, Maria Lopez, Julianne Linza, Bill Wilkinson and our entire support staff for your support throughout the year. Your commitment to inclusion makes a lasting impact on our students and community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Community Meeting last night. It was a thoughtful and enriching conversation centered on “Deepening Perspectives,” where we heard from members of our Vietnamese and Jewish communities. Together, we explored history, culture, and shared stories that reminded us of the importance of understanding, empathy, and the impact we have on one another.

Looking Ahead:

  • Senior events continue next week - please visit the Class of 2025 webpage for all details.
  • Graduation will be held on June 10 at 9:30 a.m. at EagleBank Arena. There is no school for any students on June 10.
  • The last day of school is Wednesday, June 11, and it will be an early release day with a 10:10 a.m. dismissal.
  • The Girls Lacrosse Region Finals game originally scheduled for tonight has been rescheduled to Monday, June 2nd, 7:30 p.m. at Robinson.

Stay dry this weekend!

Counselor Corner

It has been a busy end to the month of May! We guided Seniors through their Senior Survey, in which they identified their post-secondary plan and if attending college, identified which college will receive their final transcript. Seniors, if you haven’t completed the Senior Survey yet, please reach out to your counselor. You will not be able to pick up your Cap and Gown if it hasn’t been completed! Also, if your plans change over the summer, please contact Student Services so that we can make sure your transcript gets to the correct location.

Students in the Class of 2026 received a Senior Prep Lesson to highlight what they should be doing this summer to prepare for senior year. Be sure to discuss post-secondary plans with your rising senior and how to support them in their endeavors to use the most of their time this summer. They should be familiarizing themselves with the Senior Padlet, finalizing their list of 5-7 colleges (and deciding deadlines), working on essays, visiting colleges, and preparing to complete the Common App when it opens Aug. 1. The College Padlet has many great resources, like testing info, essay-writing support, and college research. This and many specialty padlets are located on the College & Career Center Padlet

Underclass intent on taking Self-directed Econ & Finance must register before June 6. Students in need of credit recovery due to failing a core course may register for free. Please let your school counselor know once you register for a summer class.

We wrapped up AP Testing this week after administering more than 2,700 tests. We couldn’t have done it without the help of our amazing volunteer proctors. Thank you!
