The Wildcat Weekly - May 26, 2025

Centreville Students, Families, and Community,

This Memorial Day, the Centreville High School community takes time to reflect on the meaning of this important day. Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember all members of the U.S. military who gave their lives in service to our nation. We are grateful for their sacrifice and for the strength of the families who carry on their legacy. Thank you to all those in the Centreville community who have served and given so much.

Last week, we started the first of many celebrations of our students. We began by acknowledging approximately 75 students in the Class of 2025 at our Senior Awards Ceremony, recognizing their achievements and contributions to our community. The celebrations continued throughout the week at a pair of Orchestra concerts which highlighted not only the talents of our students, but the strength of our performing arts program.

A special thank you to Dr. Reid for visiting our Geospatial Analysis course for their end of year presentations. Our students tackled a variety of real-world problems, one of which was exploring the FCPS boundaries using select variables to justify their decision making. It was an incredible display of how to apply knowledge to solve problems for our community.

There are only seven full days of school left for our students, followed by several early release days for graduation and underclassmen exams. This is the final stretch, so I encourage students to engage with their teachers for support if needed, and continue to stay motivated until the end of the school year.

Thank you and Go Wildcats!

Dr. Erik Healey, Principal

June 10 - PTSA Board Election Meeting: At the May PTSA meeting, we were unable to elect a new PTSA Board due to lack of interest. As a result, we will be holding a special PTSA Board Election meeting on June 10 at 7:00PM. Please consider one of the leadership positions outlined below. Without a PTSA Board, we will not be able to continue the long standing partnership with our school leadership and community.

  • President:  In coordination with the PTSA Board, set PTSA objectives for the School Year and develop and execute a plan to achieve those objectives.  Liaise with CVHS leadership on issues concerning the PTSA.  If needed, represent the PTSA to organizations outside of CVHS.  Lead PTSA meetings.  In conjunction with the PTSA Treasurer, manage the PTSA’s online store.
  • Vice President:  Support and backup the president in all the roles and responsibilities of that position.  Assume leadership of individual PTSA projects as determined by the PTSA Board.
  • Treasurer: Oversee and manage all funds transferred in and out of the PTSA’s account.  Using established online websites, maintain the PTSA’s checkbook and banking register.  Annually file the PTSA’s simplified on-line tax return.  In conjunction with the President and Secretary, manage the PTSA’s online store and file compliance documents with FCPS PTA.
  • Secretary:  Produce meeting agendas and record minutes of all PTSA meetings.  Update and maintain the PTSA’s website.  In conjunction with the Treasurer, maintain and file compliance documents with FCPS PTA.

GIS

Geospatial Analysis Presents to Dr. Reid: Our Geospatial Analysis students presented five different projects they worked on throughout the year during a visit by Dr. Reid. These students demonstrated the importance and impact of applying knowledge to solve real-world, complex problems. First, Kiera Charneco shared her research on the FCPS Boundary Review. She was followed by Sid Dusanapundi, Akarshan Anand, and Shisir Vadrevu, who explored ways to improve dangerous interstate intersections in Virginia. Next, Sam Chen and Ryan Knutti examined how the impacts of historic redlining in Richmond and Lynchburg continue to affect their populations today. Seth Witte and Ashish Sunkarapalli investigated how urban heat islands impact the cities of Dallas and San Diego. Finally, Zach McDonald and John Poythress identified the most viable high-speed train projects in the United States.

SeniorAwards

Senior Awards Ceremony: We honored seniors who earned military, community, and school-based scholarships — recognitions that reflect their hard work, service, and potential. We also recognized those who have shown exceptional growth, perseverance and outstanding scholarship throughout their four years here at Centreville and truly embodied the Wildcat values of respect, opportunity, achievement, and responsibility. A special thanks to Ms. Kara Stamper, our dedicated College and Career Specialist, and to our school counselors, Ms. Shantell Russ and Ms. Saira Villeda for their leadership and planning of such an amazing event.

CVHS Orchestras Shine in Senior Celebration Concerts: Congratulations to the Centreville HS Symphony and String Orchestras on two unforgettable evenings filled with music, memories, and recognition! A highlight was the formal procession of 52 seniors, honored with awards, scholarships, and slideshows celebrating their journeys and future plans. The audience enjoyed outstanding solo and ensemble performances by members of the Class of 2025, followed by the 112-member Symphony Orchestra performing The Never Ending Story, Sleeping Beauty Waltz, and Phantom of the Opera, all set to student-edited video backdrops.

On Thursday evening, two-hundred CVHS string orchestra students took the stage for the “Orchestra Pops!” concert.  Student-edited videos were again featured on the big screen as the students performed movie music like How to Train Your Dragon and The Incredibles as well as popular music from The Beatles to Chappell Roan. Centreville High School is honored to have the tremendous community, school, and county support that makes it possible for our Wildcat student musicians to thrive!

Important Information

School Board Unanimously Adopts the FCPS 2025-26 Budget: The Fairfax County School Board unanimously adopted the FCPS Fiscal Year 2025-26 Approved Budget. Facing years of chronic underfunding, the final budget required $121 million in reductions to the needs-based budget that was carefully developed with the FCPS community’s high expectations in mind. While some adjustments were made, the school division will continue to do what is necessary to provide a world-class education for every student. Read more about the budget in this news release

Phase 2 Community Boundary Review Meetings: Families, staff, and community members can explore and visualize potential boundary scenarios using a customized Boundary Explorer Tool. The tool will be accessible from the FCPS website. You are also invited to participate in another series of community meetings in order to review and reflect on the initial draft scenarios before the start of summer break:

Click the date to register. Each meeting will be hybrid, meaning that you may attend in person or via Zoom. Childcare for in-person participants and language interpretation/translation for all participants will be available as needed. Another round of community meetings will be held in the fall.

Visit FCPS’ Comprehensive Boundary Review page for more information.

Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance!: As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to remember to check your students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Families that earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2025-26 school year will be available this summer.

If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2024-25 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price meals.

Student Testing Results Coming Soon: Throughout May and June, you will receive your child’s spring assessment results. If you aren’t sure what assessments your child took this year, there is a list of tests by grade level on the FCPS website.

How the results are delivered depends on the test. Scores will be delivered in SIS ParentVUE or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about how test results are reported to families. Individual test websites provide report translations and help for interpreting test results. Please contact us with any testing questions or for additional information about how we use test results to support student success.

Support Your Child’s Success in SIS ParentVUE: Signing up for a SIS ParentVUE account helps you to support your child’s academic success! Caregivers can view important information like attendance, grades, progress reports, and assessment scores through ParentVUE.

Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. A SIS ParentVUE app is available for Apple and Android devices.
