We are proud to sponsor a drive for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter in Lorton! Students in Ms. Fish’s Friday Enrichment class, have been working on the drive and hope to donate as many of the items listed above as possible to support our furry friends! Please send in items with your student, drop off items in the Main Office, or stop by our Community Collection Event at The Plaza on Friday, June 6 from 3:00-5:00 pm.
Thank you for supporting the Fairfax County Animal Shelter in Lorton!
Greetings Irving Families,
Thank you to the 15 chaperones who have signed up to support our 8th grade Celebration next Friday, May 30 from 6:00-8:00 pm. We could use a few more to help with the event as we expect well over 500 students to attend. As a reminder our chaperones help with food and drinks, set up, monitoring the game areas, our photo area, and help with clean up. We are also continuing to accept donations of food and drinks through the Sign-Up form linked below. We truly appreciate all the support we are receiving and look forward to celebrating with our 8th graders next Friday.
As we approach the end of the school year, I am sharing another reminder that it is time to collect all school borrowed items and prepare them to be returned. We will be collecting laptops, with cases on, and chargers on June 4th and 5th and Yondr Pouches on June 6th. Also, please have your child look for any library books that need to be returned, there is a drop box right outside the library for books, in case the library is closed.
Lastly, this morning, I spoke to our entire student body through Zoom, reminding everyone that the FCPS Students Rights and Responsibilities is in effect as are our ROCK (Respect, Ownership, Communication, Kindness) expectations. We want to make sure that we can end our year in a positive manner. While our SOL assessments are over, we still have work to do, final exams to take, and many fun activities for students to participate in and we want to make sure everyone can participate and enjoy the last few weeks of the school year. If you would please reinforce this message over the long weekend, I would appreciate it.
Take Care!
Cindy Conley
Principal

8th Grade Celebration
Friday, May 30 from 6:00-8:00 pm
- The purpose of this event is to have fun and celebrate one last time as a class before they head out for the summer and on to high school.
- Only 8th grade students attending Irving Middle School may attend. *registration for after school is required*
- The 8th grade celebration is NOT a formal event.
- This event will be in our 7th grade gym and out on our tennis courts/black top (weather permitting). Students should be comfortable to dance, play games, and likely take a lot of pictures in our photo section with the horseman backdrop.
- In previous years, students have worn a pair of slacks and a polo type shirt or a skirt/blouse or dress, again NO formal attire or high heels are required or recommended for this event (often high heels are taken off within about 5 minutes of arriving…).
- Students often attend in groups, so having a “date” is NOT a requirement to attend.
- We will be utilizing outdoor spaces for the event - fingers crossed for good weather!
-
We need volunteers to make this celebration a success - please see the link below to volunteer as a chaperone for the 8th Grade Celebration and/or donate snacks. Thank you in advance for helping us make this celebration a successful event for our students.

Health Room Update:
All medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school (12:15pm) on Wednesday, June 11. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.
Irving Summer Math- Independent Work
If you have a student who is a rising 8th grader going from Math 7 to Algebra 1, please consider having them work on their algebra readiness skills using the resources available on our website here. The Algebra Readiness Skills document provides a set of pre-algebra skills with learning resources (slides, online textbook and instruction video) and practice problems for each skill. This practice and review will help them start off on the right foot in Algebra 1 next school year.
🚍 Student Bus Passes Offer Free Transportation All Year

Student Testing Results Coming Soon
Throughout May and June, you will receive your child’s spring assessment results. If you aren’t sure what assessments your child took this year, there is a list of tests by grade level on the FCPS website.
How the results are delivered depends on the test. Scores will be delivered in SIS ParentVUE or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines.
Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about how test results are reported to families. Individual test websites provide report translations and help for interpreting test results. Please contact us with any testing questions or for additional information about how we use test results to support student success.
Support Your Child’s Success in SIS ParentVUE Signing up for a SIS ParentVUE account helps you to support your child’s academic success! Caregivers can view important information like attendance, grades, progress reports, and assessment scores through ParentVUE.
Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. A SIS ParentVUE app is available for Apple and Android devices.
Need help creating a SIS ParentVue account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.
If you already have an account, be sure your contact information is up-to-date. Parents/guardians can update their phone numbers or email addresses in the Parent/Guardian section. Find more information and an FAQ online.
The end of the year is quickly approaching! As such, it is time for students to return all library materials they have borrowed. An overdue notice was sent out on Monday of this week. Notices will be sent more frequently as the end of the year draws near. The library does not charge overdue fees or charge for lost books. But, we do want our materials back. We list the price of items on our overdue notices so that it is clear how costly our materials are. When books are not returned, more of next year’s budget goes toward replacing copies instead of purchasing new items. Please take time to review overdue notices with your student and assist them in searching “all of the various places” that their library books might be.
We are aiming to have all library materials returned by May 28th. [Note: The only exception is 7th grade students who are using a library book for their current novel project. They may keep the book until the project is submitted.] Thank you for your help in getting our library materials back on the shelves for the summer.

🥗 Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance! As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to remember to check your students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.
Families that earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2025-26 school year will be available this summer.
If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2024-25 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price meals.
