Thoreau Matters Friday, May 23rd, 2025

Dear Thoreau Middle School Families,

We have had a good week at Thoreau and it is encouraging to see our students and staff staying focused as we make our way through the testing sessions that come with the end of the year.Β  I hope you have a restful Memorial Day Weekend.Β  We look forward to seeing the students next Tuesday when they return.

Sincerely,

Justine Klena, Interim Principal

Expunging High School Credit Courses Taken in Middle School

Virginia state and FCPS regulations permit families of a middle school student who has completed a high school credit course to have that course expunged from the student’s record. Information about this process as well as the required Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School form is located here. Thoreau counselors will be working with families throughout the next few weeks to support this process based on progress in the course and projected final grades.Β  Please feel free to reach out to your assigned counselor with any questions.

🎬 "In the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as 'The Bard.' When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz."

🌟 Growth in Action: POG Presentations of Learning!

At Thoreau, not only do we strive for designing instruction that develops lifelong skills in our students πŸŽ“, but we have been working towards student ownership of these lifelong skills as well πŸ’‘.

To this end, all Thoreau students will be reflecting on their growth with Portrait of a Graduate (POG) skills in the form of Presentations of Learning (POL) πŸ—£οΈ during their Rise (10th) periods. Students have maintained digital portfolios πŸ’» throughout the school year to house learning artifacts that demonstrate their growth in these skills over time πŸ“‚.

On June 3rd and 4th in Rise classes, 9:48–10:31, students will be showcasing their artifacts and explaining how these artifacts demonstrate their growth over time to their peers πŸŽ‰. 2–3 Rise classes will be conducting their POG POLs in the library πŸ“š.

You are invited to observe this sampling of students in the library and to offer us feedback ✍️. If you're interested in attending, please note that it is not guaranteed you will observe YOUR student giving their POG POL πŸ‘€, but rather 2–3 classes, with the main purpose of observing what our POG POLs look like/sound like 🎀, and offering us feedback for celebrations and improvements βœ….

If you're interested and able to attend, please arrive to Thoreau on the 3rd and/or 4th by 9:30 so you can get checked in at the main office 🏫. Student ambassadors will usher you to the library, and POG POLs will begin around 9:50 ⏰.

If you’re unable to attend, we encourage you to ask your student about their growth over time in POG skills at home 🏑, and to ask them about how their POG POL went πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ.

Check out the county’s page on POG here: πŸ”— https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/portrait-graduate When you click on each attribute, there are example questions you can ask your students about their POG skill development πŸ“ˆ.

We hope you can join us on the 3rd and/or 4th of June to observe some of our students celebrating their growth in meaningful skills 🌟!
