Summer Reading

Summer Reading

Studies have repeatedly shown that the best thing your child can do over the summer months is read!  Reading over the summer helps students build reading skills, prevents summer learning loss, and prepares them for a successful school year. Check out the many programs and activities that your child can participate in so they can "Soar Through the Summer with Books!"

End of Year Laptop Return

💻 FCPS has mandated that all FCPS student laptops and chargers be returned so that they can be serviced and updated for redistribution for the 2025-2026 school year. On Wednesday, June 11, the last day of school, each classroom will return all technology equipment. Students who do not turn in their equipment will be charged $472 for a laptop/iPad.

The only exceptions are for students enrolled in a summer program who need their laptop/ipad to participate. If your child is identified for this, his/her laptop/ipad and charger will be sent home on the last day of school.

Please direct any questions you have about the laptop return process to your child’s classroom teacher, including inquiries about financial replacement for missing laptops or chargers. 🔌

Medication Pick Up

medication

As we approach the end of the school year, please keep the following in mind:

If your child has medication in the health room, a parent/guardian must pick it up during the school day and no later than 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11*, the last day of school. Any medication not picked up by the last day of school, will be destroyed according to FCPS regulation.

Student's Lunch Balance

🥗 Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance!

As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to remember to check your students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Families that earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2025-26 school year will be available this summer.

If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2024-25 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price meals.

2025 Athletic Physical Registration

*The Virginia General Assembly has changed its policy for athletic physicals. Beginning July 1, 2025, physicals will be valid for 14 months from the date they are signed by a healthcare professional, not from May 1 to June 30 as before. This change applies to all VHSL member schools in Virginia.

The VHSL physical form is also required to participate in middle school sports. https://www.vhsl.org/vhsl-physical-form/

Class Placement: Parent/Guardian Input (optional) due Friday, June 6

This spring, Hayfield ES Staff will begin creating tentative class groupings for the 2025-2026 school year. Classroom assignments will be finalized in mid-August.

When making these placements, we carefully consider many factors, including:

  • Individual student information
  • Teacher input
  • Social relationships
  • A blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning interests in every class.

Due to the numerous factors involved in creating balanced classroom placements, including teacher staffing, we are unable to honor requests for specific teachers.

If you have information you believe is important for us to consider regarding your child’s placement for next year, please complete this form by Friday, June 6.

If you do not have any specific information you would like us to consider, there is no need to complete the form.

Rec-PAC has merged with Camp Fairfax

At the conclusion of 2024 summer camp season, the Rec-PAC program joined with Camp Fairfax! Both the Rec-PAC and Camp Fairfax programs have long had shared missions and overlapping responsibilities serving the community. This new realignment of Rec-PAC under Camp Fairfax (administered by the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services) will maximize the expertise and resources of both organizations to provide a cohesive and comprehensive experience for Fairfax County families.

I’m excited to share the great news that I have arranged a time for our HES rising 7th graders to meet the HSS Military Counselor (my colleague) from across the street. She will introduce herself and do a quick Meet & Greet with our 6th grade students. The transition from elementary to middle school can be challenging. I want our HES military students and families to know that they can reach out to the HSS Military Counselor for extra support. Whether they seek services or not, seeing a familiar face goes a long way! Participation is voluntary.
