Message from Mr. Greata
One of the most remarkable things about Carter G. Woodson High School is the many ways our students include one another and lead the way in creating new, meaningful opportunities for connection. Our students and staff continually seek innovative ways to bring our community together and embody our school motto: #OneWoodson.
This past week, our Orchestra Department partnered with our Deaf and Hard of Hearing program and a technology company Music: Not Impossible to create an unforgettable experience. Using special vests, wristbands, and ankle bands that translated music into vibrations, students were able to feel the rhythms and harmonies of the orchestra in different parts of their bodies, depending on the instrument being played. Some students joined the musicians onstage to experience the vibrations firsthand from instruments like the cello and bass. The room was filled with dancing, joy, and connection. A heartfelt thank you to our student leader Maia Kim, Orchestra Director Devyn Wilcox, and Assistant Principal Michelle Case for making this powerful event possible.
Music has truly been in the air over the past two weeks, with our band, orchestra, and chorus performing their spring concerts. These outstanding performances were the result of countless hours of planning, rehearsing, and dedication. Thank you to Aaron Morgan, Helen Landers, Luke Frels, Lonnie Bickel, Devyn Wilcox, and Amy Moir for their exceptional leadership and commitment. The arts are thriving at Carter G. Woodson High School!
We also celebrated a major milestone for our seniors this past Monday during our annual Celebrate Your Plan Day. Each senior wrote their post-graduation plans—college, career, or military—on a paper balloon and displayed it on our front windows for the entire community to see. We are so proud of their achievements and loved cheering them on as they celebrated how far they’ve come and looked ahead to what’s next.
Please join us for our final virtual community meeting of the year on Thursday, May 29th at 6:30 p.m., where we will feature presentations from members of our Vietnamese and Jewish communities, sharing aspects of their culture and experience. As we’ve learned throughout the year, getting to know one another and honoring the many cultures represented in our school is vital to the strength and well-being of our community. Given that it is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month these discussions will be both timely and informative! Look for the link to the meeting in next week’s eNotify.
Good luck to our Science Olympiad team, who will be competing at Nationals tomorrow —go Team Godzilla!
This weekend, we invite you to Peach Pit Volleyball tonight at 5:00 p.m. in the main gym—come enjoy co-ed volleyball and Kona Ice! As always, stay updated on all of our athletic events and tournament results by visiting woodsonsports.com.
Please remember: there is no school on Monday in observance of Memorial Day. We encourage everyone to take time to reflect on those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.
Wishing you a joyful and restful weekend!

Virtual Community Night
On Thursday, May 29th at 6:30 p.m. we will be hosting our final Virtual Community Night of the school year. This year, we have focused on addressing hate speech in our community meetings and with our students. One common theme that has been present in our dialogue is the need to learn about the different communities that are part of our larger Carter G. Woodson community. To that end, we will be welcoming members of our Vietnamese and Jewish communities to share their experiences and we are looking forward to hearing their perspectives. The sharing of their story will help us gain a deeper understanding of our entire community, and will serve as a model for further future learning.
The link to the virtual meeting will be sent one day prior through eNotify. We hope to see you virtually on May 29th, at 6:30 pm!

Required Immunizations for Rising 12th Graders
Additional immunizations are required for students entering 12th grades.
- All students entering 12th grade are to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the beginning of school.
- To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 16 or older.
Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and healthcare providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time. Additional resources are available on the FCPS Immunization Resources webpage and the Fairfax County Health Department.

We love to see our alumni, however, due to year-end testing and instruction, alumni visits will only be allowed after school hours. If you plan to visit after hours, please reach out to the teacher(s) you would like to visit to make sure they will be available after school.
