At South Lakes, our teachers bring this to life every day. They hold students to high standards, create opportunities for deep engagement, and design learning that prepares students for the real world.
We are seeing the results of that commitment, not only in our SOL scores, but also in our IB program. The promising results we are anticipating are a result of our strong belief in what our students are capable of achieving and our systematic approach to support the academic, social, and emotional needs of our diverse student population.
As a result of this shared commitment, South Lakes students are not only being accepted into prestigious colleges and universities across the country—they are thriving there. More importantly, they are entering the world beyond high school confident, capable, and prepared to succeed. Their achievements reflect the strength of our staff, the support of our community, and the belief that every student deserves the opportunity to rise to their full potential.
As we move forward quickly towards the end of the year, please remember the importance of ensuring students attend school every day. Don't forget to check our website regularly for any schedule updates. Let's keep this positive momentum going all the way to June 11.
With Gratitude,
Carlos Seward

Open Gate Screening at
South Lakes High School
Seahawk Families -
We wanted to update you and make sure that you are well-informed of a change to our morning arrival and entry routines. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is installing Open Gate screeners in all high schools and daily screening is now required at all FCPS high schools. Our screeners will be actively starting tomorrow morning, Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Door 1 and Door 4. We will work diligently to move students as quickly as possible through the system to ensure on-time arrival.
- All students must enter the school through Door 1 or Door 4.
- All other doors are no longer student entry points.
- Screening will begin at 7:30 am each day
Please visit the Frequently Asked Questions page on the FCPS website for more information about the weapons screening system. You can watch this Video for an explanation of how it works. You may also submit a question to our Chief of Safety and Security Office.
Please reach out to an administrator or the security team if you have additional questions or concerns. Thank you for your support in our shared commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment for students and staff.
From the SLHS Health Room:
Medication Pickup
The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time (10:00 AM) on the last day of school (Wednesday, June 11, 2025).
Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed.
It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.
If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program.
If you have any questions, please contact the School Health Aide, Ashley Haas, at abhaas@fcps.edu, or the Public Health Nurse MaryEllen Wolf at mwolf@fcps.edu.

Plan Now! Physicals for 2025-2026 Athletic Participation
New Physical Form for Athletics: A new law that becomes effective on July 1, 2025, requires students to submit to the school principal or designee a signed Preparticipation Physical Evaluation form completely filled in and properly signed, attesting that the student has received a physical examination, was found to be physically fit for athletic competition no more than 14 calendar months prior to the date on which the health care official signed the report, and that the student’s parents consent to the student’s participation.
The new physical form can be found here. We continue to encourage students and families to get their annual physicals in the months of May, June, and July, as this will ensure students’ physicals are valid through all seasons of the following school year.

SY2026 Required Immunizations for Rising Seniors
All students entering 12th grade are to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the beginning of school.
To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 16 or older.
Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and health care providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time. Additional resources are available on the FCPS Immunization Resources webpage and the Fairfax County Health Department.
