SEPTA Updates for May 2025

SEPTA

May Meeting Takeaways: SEPTA is actively advocating for full special education funding and opposing cuts to transition services, while also participating in boundary reviews with a focus on special ed impact. A new board was elected, the summer budget was approved, and over 200 nominations will be recognized at the May 3rd awards ceremony. At the national level, urgent concerns include proposed federal efforts to dismantle the Department of Education and cut Medicaid, which would significantly impact special education services.

Special education parents and FCPS staff, the time is NOW to raise our voices! There are over 30,000 students with disabilities in FCPS – let’s see how many people we can get to speak up on their behalf!!

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors did not fully fund the requested FCPS budget which resulted in a $120,000,000 shortfall. In order to balance the shortfall, the FCPS School Board has to make significant program cuts. Just announced this past Thursday night, 5/8, are budget cuts that directly impact special education students. A public hearing was held on Tuesday, 5/13. Be sure to follow the Fairfax County Board for updates.

Congratulations to the Dranesville Special Education Teacher Award Nominee:
