Superintendent Revises Proposed Budget Based on County Transfer

Budget

At the May 8 School Board meeting, the Superintendent presented revisions to the FY 2026 budget proposal, outlining how the school division plans to address a $149.6 million shortfall in requested funding while continuing to prioritize classrooms, educators, and student achievement.

To close the gap, the Superintendent is recommending $121.3 million in expenditure adjustments. These include scaling back employee compensation increases to 6% for staff represented by the Fairfax Education Union and 5% for all others—both reduced from the originally proposed 7%. Additional measures include deferring $15.3 million for new social studies instructional materials and reducing allocations for classroom monitors and special education department chairs.

Proposed staffing formula changes would eliminate 275 positions across schools, averaging fewer than 1.5 positions per school, which could impact the division’s competitive standing in the region. Other proposed cuts include reductions to central office budgets, funding for electric buses, and non-local professional development travel.

Despite these challenging decisions, the division remains focused on student success and preserving classroom quality. To learn more, please refer to the May 8 School Board meeting materials.

The School Board will hold its final budget work session on May 20 and is expected to vote on the FY 2026 Approved Budget on May 22, before the new fiscal year begins on July 1.
