Dear London Towne Family,
As the school year is quickly coming to an end, we continue to be incredibly proud of the remarkable growth our lions are demonstrating across all areas of their learning journey. From reading and writing to math, science, and social studies, their dedication and hard work are truly shining through.
But it's not just in their academic subjects where we're seeing incredible strides. Our students are also actively cultivating the essential Portrait of a Graduate attributes that will serve them well far beyond our school walls. They are becoming more goal-directed and resilient, showcasing their abilities as creative and critical thinkers, honing their skills as effective collaborators and communicators, and growing into thoughtful ethical and global citizens.
Upcoming Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning (POG POL)
In the coming weeks, our students will have a unique opportunity to reflect on their yearly growth in these crucial Portrait of a Graduate skills through their Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning (POG POL). This exciting assessment is a type of portfolio defense where students will share their personal narrative of growth, answering the questions: “I grew, I can prove it, and here’s why it matters.”
These presentations can take various forms, from one-on-one discussions to small group conversations, and they offer a wealth of benefits for our students:
-
Analyzing evidence of their growth from the work they’ve done in classes.
-
Building self-awareness of themselves as learners.
-
Strengthening relationships with teachers and peers.
-
Discussing personal strengths and interests.
-
Making connections to their lives beyond the classroom.
-
Developing public speaking, presentation, and interview skills.
-
Celebrating successes and determining next steps for continued growth.
The POG POL is a powerful testament to our students' comprehensive development and a fantastic way for them to articulate their learning journey. We are so excited for them to showcase all they've accomplished!
Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
Roaring with Towne Pride,
🦁 Shele Banford, Principal
🦁🦁 Lucy Zamora and Jordan Moore, Assistant Principals

Mental Health Awareness Month |
🧠 Mental Health Awareness Month Activities for all Levels
Our Minds Matter has created a calendar of activities for the FCPS community. This calendar of MH Awareness Month Activities includes information so that anyone can login to the OMM Club portal (slide 2). Use these activities to uplift resources, normalize conversations about mental health, and inspire others to take action for their mental health.
Many of the linked activities were designed for middle and high school students, but can easily be adapted for use with younger students and families.

Cameras on School Bus Stop Arms |
🛑 Cameras Installed on School Bus Stop Arms
Cameras have been installed on the stop arms of 50 FCPS school buses. These cameras will be used to identify drivers who pass stopped school buses while children are entering and exiting the bus (called a “stop arm violation”).
Drivers have begun to receive warnings. After a 30-day warning period, citations will begin to be issued on Monday, May 12.
According to Virginia law, drivers must stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights on and their stop signs extended. Motorists should stop when approaching from any direction, unless there is a barrier or median separating their lane from where the bus is stopped. They should remain stopped until everyone is clear, and the bus is moving.
We appreciate our law enforcement partners for working with FCPS to improve road safety and reduce accidents. Read more about the stop arm cameras and other ways FCPS works with our county partners to keep students safe on their way to and from school.

FCPS Summer Camps |
☀️ Registration is now available for summer camps offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students. Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA) camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Registration begins for these programs on Monday, March 10, and ends Friday, June 6.
Tech Adventure Camp (TAC) is a week-long exploratory camp designed to allow current K-5 students to explore activities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), culinary arts, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. Watch this video about CTE camps.
E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for students in grades 2-5 who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Students take part in four daily classes related to dance, music, theater, and visual art. They work with FCPS fine arts teachers who create fun and engaging classes.
For more information, see the Summer Learning page.

💚 This May, take action, raise your voice, and help change the conversation around mental health! Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been a driving force in addressing the challenges faced by millions of Americans living with mental health conditions. Now, more than ever, NAMI needs you to be part of this movement. Whether by sharing your story, spreading awareness, or advocating for change, every action helps break the stigma and build a more supportive world for all.
💚 Theme: “In Every Story, There’s Strength”
💚 Mental health journeys are unique, but the strength found within them is universal. “In Every Story, There’s Strength,” highlights the resilience and diverse experiences that shape mental health journeys within our community. NAMI’s campaign celebrates the power of storytelling to fuel connection, understanding, and hope for those navigating their own mental health path. Each story shared is a testament to the possibility of recovery and the strength that lies within us all. Learn more from the National Alliance on Mental Illness. .

All schools and offices will be closed on Monday, May 26, for the Memorial Day holiday. Learn about the history of Memorial Day. See the complete school year calendar.
