CORRECTED LINK: Special Edition Hive Happenings – Budget Update

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

On Thursday, Dr. Reid presented an updated budget for Fiscal Year 2026 to the school board because there is currently a $121M gap between what the Board of Supervisors is planning to approve to transfer and what was asked by FCPS. This new budget, if passed as presented, will impact Stenwood. It proposes:

  1. Elementary schools will reduce the Advanced Academic Resource teacher from full-time to half-time.
  2. Elementary schools will reduce the Special Education Department Chair position from full-time to half-time.
  3. Elementary schools will eliminate the monitor funding that is used to provide planning time to teachers in an attempt to provide equitable planning in comparison to middle and high school teachers.
  4. Class sizes will increase at all levels.

As a school that has a local full-time AAP Program and as a school with specialized programs for students with disabilities, we will be significantly impacted by this proposed reduction in staffing.  In addition, without the monitor funds, we will not be able to provide teachers with any additional planning time.

I invite all community members to engage in this process and to share your opinions with your elected school board members, who will vote on the budget on May 22nd. There will be an opportunity to speak before the board on Tuesday, May 13th and Wednesday, May 14th (if needed). You can find more information here. You can also reach out to your elected Board of Supervisors members to share your opinions before they finalize their budget as well.

As always, thank you for your partnership with us in your child's education at Stenwood Elementary.

Sincerely,

Erica Riley, Principal
