Saturday evening, 5 GBE staff members were nominated at the 8th annual Special Education Parent Teacher Association’s (SEPTA) Excellence Awards ceremony.
Mrs. Charita Eley and Mrs. Megan Tamakloe - Assistant Principals
Mrs. Carin Aiken - General Ed. Teacher
Ms. Christie Miller - Art Teacher
Mrs. Wafika Albani - Family Liaison
These awards celebrate the extraordinary efforts of FCPS educators, staff, schools, and community members who make a lasting impact on our students with disabilities. There were 200 nominations this year — wow! — and each nominee was recognized for their dedication to promoting accessibility and inclusion, strong family-school partnerships, and a culture of belonging and leadership for each and every one of our students. This is critical work which touches on many parts of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, including Goal 2 (Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered), Pillar A (Differentiated and Culturally Responsive Learning Environments) and Pillar B (Vibrant Home, School, & Community Partnerships). Go Team FCPS!!
The planning for the 2025-2026 school year has begun! Since we work in partnership with our families to provide a supportive school environment for our students, we would like to invite you to share some information about your child. This form is not intended for families to request specific teachers. Rather we are looking for more input to assist us with making the best teacher and student match.
Please complete the information below (one form per child) and submit the form by Friday, May 30th.

 Jewish American Heritage Month
May is a national month of recognition of the history of Jewish contributions to American culture, acknowledging the diverse achievement of the Jewish community in the U.S. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
 Mental Health Awareness Month
Join us in wearing green as we recognize Mental Health Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations around emotional well-being.💚
 Staff Appreciation Week
Since 1984, National PTA has designated one week in May as Teacher Appreciation Week. National Teacher Day began in 1953 when former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt proposed that Congress set aside a day to acknowledge the work of educators. Since 1985, NEA has celebrated National Teacher Day on the Tuesday of the first full week of May.
Thank you to all of our staff who make GBE such a wonderful place to learn, teach, and grow! 💚

Thank you to the Greenbriar Shopping Center McDonald’s for their amazing donation and show of appreciation. They were able to donate over 100 + cookies to GBE for staff appreciation. 💚
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will begin finalizing the budget on Tuesday, May 6. The current advertised budget underfunds FCPS by $150 million.
Without new revenue, such as the meals tax (adding just $2-3 to an average dining bill for a family of four), FCPS will face significant cuts.
What Is at Risk?
Go to fcps.edu/crossroads to see examples of where FCPS exceeds minimum state standards.
Additional immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grades.
- All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
- To meet the Tdap requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 7 or older.
- To meet the MenACWY requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 10 or older.
- As a parent/guardian, you may decide that your child not receive the HPV vaccination. The school does not require documentation if a parent/guardian elects for their student not to receive the HPV vaccination.
- All students entering 12th grade are to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the beginning of school.
- To meet the MenACWY 12th grade requirement, the vaccination must be administered at age 16 or older.
Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and healthcare providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time. Additional resources are available on the FCPS Immunization Resources webpage and the Fairfax County Health Department.
✅ Share Feedback With County Health Department on School Health ServicesThe Fairfax County Health Department and Fairfax County Public Schools School Health Services invite parents/caregivers of FCPS students to participate in a survey on satisfaction with school health room services. The survey takes about five minutes to complete and will be open until Monday, May 5.

Use PickUp Patrol to report absences
In emergencies, email or call the front office
This is a reminder to put your students' absence, arriving late, or leaving school early in Pickup Patrol (PUP). All default plans should be up to date. Make sure you change the default plan anytime you change your students' permanent dismissal. Emails and phone calls are no longer encouraged, except for emergencies. When you enter a change in PUP, it goes directly to your child’s teacher as well as our front office staff. Please remember to provide a reason for the absence, late arrival or early dismissal. Changes must be entered on PUP by 2:30pm each day. If you need assistance setting up your PickUp Patrol account, please reach out to the front office at 703-633-6400 or GreenbriarEastOfficeParentContact@fcps.edu.
