Roadrunner Rundown

May 5, 2025

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are proud of the hard work our students are putting into composting and grateful to our PTA for leading this initiative. You can view our success in composting on the FCPS website and watch videos from several news stations sharing about our composting program (below).

Zero Waste Lunch Results:

  • Helped us understand what we waste and how to reduce it.
  • We encouraged reusable water bottles, food containers, snack bags, and utensils.
  • The total weight of waste per class was divided by the # of students in each class eating in the cafeteria that day. The first year we had 76 kilograms, this year we had only made 12 kilograms of lunch trash!
  • The classes that created the least amount of waste were: Mrs. McCulla’s kindergarten class and Ms. Nevola’s 3rd grade class.
  • There was one class that created ZERO pounds of waste – Ms. Bambola’s 6th grade class!
  • Students were encouraged to use reusable water bottles, food containers, snack bags, and utensils.

This week is “Staff Appreciation Week”, we are excited to celebrate our staff all week long!  The PTA started the celebration off this morning with a glamorous walk down the MRES red carpet in the lobby with delicious coffee and pastries.  We appreciate the efforts of parent volunteers to pamper our staff this week.

Have a great week!

School Events and Information

Attendance Matters

As we prepare for end of year assessments, school attendance is crucial for your student's success. Please plan any appointments and trips for non-testing days. It is challenging to schedule make-up testing and students miss additional instructional time doing a make-up session. Check your child’s stock of school supplies. Sometimes a colorful new pencil or a new box of crayons can help students’ spirits soar.

Spring Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests

These assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards. The content tested varies by grade level. See below for the scheduled dates this spring. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about the assessment. We ask that you do not schedule appointments on the day of your child’s SOL test. Please contact Kelly Willis if you know your child will be absent on the day of testing.

International Compost Awareness Week!

As part of International Awareness Week, we’re excited to invite our Marshall Road families to join us in supporting a greener future by composting at home! Our school’s composting efforts were recently featured on the  FOX5 News and WJLA/ABC7 News highlighting the positive impact we’re making together. The Mayor of the Town of Vienna has even shared a special video message inviting all Marshall Road families to drop off your food scraps at the Vienna Farmers Market. Together, we can keep learning, growing, and making a difference—for our kids and our planet. For more information about composting in Fairfax, check out this link.

Family Sports NIght

Family Sports Night & Ice Cream Social

Join us for a fun-filled Family Sports Night on Friday, May 16, 5:30-7:30 pm where there is something for everyone! Enjoy games and sports for all ages, cool off with ice cream for the kids, and explore the new playground! We will also have a chalk art contest, so bring your creativity and get ready to make the sidewalk come alive with color. This is a family event, and all children must be accompanied by an adult. We can’t wait to see you there for an afternoon of fun, connection, and community spirit!

Fairfax County Advertised Budget

The current Fairfax County advertised budget underfunds FCPS by $150 million. What is at risk? Here are just a few examples:

  • Activities and Athletics
  • Advanced Academic Resource Teachers
  • Class Sizes
  • Elementary Art, Music, PE teachers
  • Elementary Special Education Lead Teachers
  • Adult Education and Nontraditional programs
  • Cybersecurity
  • Safety and Security

These are in addition to cuts that the Fairfax County Government already announced to programs that support our schools:

  • Middle School After School programs
  • School Crossing Guards
  • Public Health Nurses supporting our schools

Do you believe in the power and promise of public education? Submit feedback on the FY26 Budget Proposal by taking this survey.

Staff Spotlight

MRES Staff Spotlight

Ms. Rocha, MRES Teacher, is the winner of the priority parking spot this week. Ms. Rocha has been part of Marshall Road for 6 years. She mentioned that her favorite part of working at Marshall Road is the sense of community that is felt amongst school staff, connecting with the community it serves and the support from parents/PTA for not only the students but staff as well!  Ms. Rocha’s hobby is being an aunt to her 2 beautiful nieces and her precious nephew. She added: "They are what bring me true joy!” Ms. Rocha was born in Bolivia, but came with her family to the United States when she was only six months old. She has kept with her roots and has been a part of the Bolivian folkloric dance community here in the DMV for about 15 years now.
