📝 Testing Tips:

📝 How can parents/guardians help on testing days?

    • 🕘 Ensure your student is present and on time. Avoid scheduling appointments on these dates.

    • 😴🥣 Ensure your student gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast in the morning.

    • 🎧 If your student has an audio accommodation for testing, be sure they bring headphones to school.

    • 📵 Remind your student to have their cell phone off and away in their YONDR pouch.

    • 💻 Verify your student’s Chromebook is in working order.

    • 🛠️ Computer issues should be reported immediately to Student IT Support.

    • 🔋 Fully charge their Chromebook every night.

    • 🔌 Pack their charger in their backpack (if your student lost their charger, please purchase a replacement via MySchoolBucks).

🎧 Supply Check – Headphones Needed

At this point of the year, many school supplies seem to have been misplaced. Our students need headphones daily to meet their Lexia requirements, in addition to other end of year assessments. Please ensure your child is coming to school with headphones every day. This helps avoid students sharing the limited headphones that the school has available.

We also welcome any headphone donations families are willing and able to provide. Thank you!

📚 Attendance Matters – Important Reminders

Your children can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year or about 18 days. That can be just one day every two weeks, and that can happen before you know it.

Some absences are unavoidable. We understand that children will get sick and need to stay home occasionally. The important thing is to get your children to school as often as possible.
Sporadic absences, not just those on consecutive days of school, matter. Before you know it – just one or two days a month can add up to nearly 10 percent of the school year.

If too many absences occur, it is still a problem whether they are excused or unexcused because they represent too much lost learning time in the classroom.

Too many absent students can affect the whole classroom, creating churn and slowing down instruction.

👏 Student Spotlight

All state

Congratulations to Daniel K and Nellie S for representing Thoreau MS at the 2025 Virginia Middle School All-State Honors Choir in Richmond, VA! This is a huge honor and showcases the amazing vocal talents of these students. Daniel and Nellie were selected among 1,200 applicants from across the state and had the opportunity to work with two nationally recognized conductors from the University of Toronto and the University of North Texas. We know Mr. McNamara is very proud of them!

💉 Protect Your Child From Measles

Measles cases continue to rise in the U.S. About 1 in 5 people who get measles end up in the hospital. Measles can cause severe complications like a lung infection (pneumonia), brain inflammation (encephalitis), and possibly death, even with medical care.

Symptoms of measles typically include high fever (may spike up to 104°F), cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a rash that appears around 3-5 days after other symptoms begin. The rash typically starts on the face and spreads down the body.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to protect a child from measles is by getting two doses of the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

If you are unsure of your child's vaccination status or your personal vaccination status, talk to your health care provider. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your health care provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources.
