Coates Cosmic Coffee Club

ccc

Our before-school Coffee Club has blossomed into its very own student-run business: Coates Cosmic Coffee!

Our amazing 5th and 6th graders — including Kadija Coker, Isaac Douglas, Edom Gebrewold, Ayesha Mohammed Sadik Raghma, Ruwaida Hoque, Harper Johnson, Ayat Musadiq, Yusra Burhan, Ava Gillie, Josue Ramos Orellana, Dominic Mendoza Dewane, Annabelle Avila, Angelique Gomez Maldonado, Alani Alexander, Yusra Suliman Khaliqi, and Bushra Musadiq — have been hard at work bringing this venture to life. They've taken the initiative to purchase supplies, design a menu of coffee and tea options, create order forms, and even develop their own advertisements. And guess what? Their grand opening was yesterday, April 24th!

Every Thursday, these young entrepreneurs step into various roles – serving as baristas, organizing deliveries, managing orders, and truly running their own business. This hands-on experience is giving them invaluable opportunities to develop their Portrait of a Graduate durable skills, including communication, collaboration, and becoming goal-directed and resilient individuals.

We are so proud of their hard work and initiative! A huge shoutout to our Creativity Lab teacher, Ms. Elizabeth Reed, for sponsoring and supporting this innovative club. This exciting opportunity was also made possible thanks to a generous grant from Educate Fairfax.

The SOLs are just around the corner! Please refer to our testing calendar above for important dates. Families, you can help set your child up for success by ensuring they attend school regularly to prepare, get a good night’s rest before testing, and eat a healthy breakfast on the morning of the test.

Here are a few additional tips to help your child feel confident and ready:

Stick to a Routine – Keep bedtime and morning routines consistent to reduce stress.

Encourage a Positive Mindset – Remind your child that they’ve worked hard and are prepared!

Arrive on Time – Being on time helps your child start the day calm and ready.

Thank you for your support in making this a successful testing season! 🎉

Coates Boundary Study and Capacity Community Meeting

The public is invited on Wednesday, May 7, 6:30-7:30 p.m., to Coates Elementary School for a community meeting to discuss space and capacity solutions for students for the 2025-26 school year (next school year). Language interpretation will be available. The school’s program capacity utilization was 131% for School Year 2023-24, with a projected program capacity utilization of 172% for School Year 2028-29, as shown in the Adopted FCPS Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for FY 2025-29.

Coates Elementary School was identified as a priority for review for a potential boundary adjustment as part of the Adopted CIP. Community meetings for input on the scope of the boundary study were held in January 2025. The School Board voted on a scope in March 2025. Given the ongoing comprehensive boundary review, the Coates ES boundary study will be prioritized in that effort. This meeting will focus on how to accomodate students at Coates ES for next school year.

Visit the Coates Boundary Study webpage for additional information and to sign up for the Coates project email list. Communication about this ongoing work will also be shared by the school and applicable School Board representatives including: Robyn Lady (Dranesville District), Melanie Meren (Hunter Mill District), Seema Dixit (Sully District), and At-Large representatives Kyle McDaniel, Ryan McElveen, and Ilryong Moon.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener: Parent Reports

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing information on their SEL skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the SEL Screener Results Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.

Protect Your Child from Measles: What You Need to Know

Measles cases continue to rise in the U.S. About 1 in 5 people who get measles end up in the hospital. Measles can cause severe complications like a lung infection (pneumonia), brain inflammation (encephalitis), and possibly death, even with medical care. Symptoms of measles typically include:

  • High fever (may spike up to 104°F)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes
  • A rash that appears around 3-5 days after other symptoms begin. The rash typically starts on the face and spreads down the body.

The best way to protect a child from measles is by getting two doses of the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

If you are unsure of your child's vaccination status or your personal vaccination status, talk to your health care provider. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your health care provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources.

Any staff, student, or community member can nominate an individual for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Monday, May 19. Visit the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award webpage to access the nomination information form.

✅ Share Feedback With County Health Department on School Health Services

The Fairfax County Health Department and Fairfax County Public Schools School Health Services invite parents/caregivers of FCPS students to participate in a survey on satisfaction with school health room services. The survey takes about five minutes to complete and will be open until Monday, May 5.

School health rooms (clinics) are managed by public health nurses and school health aides. Those staff provide care for students who become sick or injured during the school day, who require medications during the school day, and/or who have a chronic health condition that requires management during the school day.

Additionally, the school health room staff:

  • Provide health education, communicable disease prevention, and health screenings.
  • Work with schools to help address the root causes of population health disparities so that all students have equitable access to educational and health opportunities.
  • Ensure that students have care for minor injuries and illnesses, and chronic health conditions, thus helping to minimize health barriers to learning.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of school health room services as well as inform future planning for schools.
