Military Families: Help with Special Education Services

Celebrating the Month of the Military Child

Ambassadors with Falcon

This month, we proudly celebrated the Month of the Military Child with two fantastic events honoring our military-connected students.

🏃♀️ Purple UP Fun Run – Saturday, April 5
Sangster’s blacktop turned into a sea of purple as over 150 runners participated in our Purple UP Fun Run! Thanks to the amazing support of our Sangster PTA, and a grant from Educate Fairfax, our Student Ambassadors handed out donuts and water with smiles all around.

🎉 Purple UP Day “Clap-In” – Wednesday, April 9
On FCPS’s official Purple UP Day, Sangster staff lined the lobby and front entrance with music, cheer, and a giant purple balloon arch to welcome our 180+ military-connected students. It was a joyful and heartwarming start to the day!

🌼 Military Child Dandelion Display
Throughout April, our Café has featured a special bulletin board showcasing a giant dandelion—the official flower of the military child. Each petal bears the name of one of our military-connected students, highlighting the powerful theme:
“Rooted in Resilience, but Born to Fly.”

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Now Available

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our counselor, Lisa Railan (ltrailan@fcps.edu), with any questions.

Parent Input for the 2025 – 2026 School Year

As we are beginning to make plans for the 2025–2026 school year, parents of rising Kinder – 6th Graders are welcome to email Ms. Jankovich at ALJankovich@fcps.edu to share any information you feel is important for class placement considerations for next year. Sharing information about your child is OPTIONAL. Please know, many factors are at play when forming classes for a new school year, therefore specific teacher requests and/or requests to place your child (or not place your child) with certain students cannot always be honored – there are no guarantees.

Very Important: Please write “Placement Information for (insert child’s first and last name) 2025 – 2026” in the subject line if you choose to send an email. Please send all communication by June 27, 2025. Thank you!

🩹 Avoid the Summer Rush: Schedule Required Seventh Grade Vaccinations Today!

Parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend public school. All students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older.
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.
  • A complete series of two doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent/guardian, at the parent’s/guardian’s sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer.

Friendly Reminders!

🚪After School Procedures

We have been having some issues with students and parents attempting to enter classrooms after the school day has ended. Please remember to be respectful of our teacher's space. If it is after 4:15pm you may not re-enter a classroom. If you are in the building for an after school activity please remember to remain in your designated area. If you or your student have forgotten an item, it will need to wait until the next school day. We appreciate you working with us to maintain our school's safety.

📅 Attendance

Please remember to email or call the attendance line with any messages regarding your student's attendance. Absences and late arrivals should be reported to avoid getting a robo-call from FCPS. If you email the teacher to let them know about your student's attendance, please copy SangsterElem.Attendance@fcps.edu to ensure your message reaches our attendance staff. You can also call 703-644-8282 to report any attendance messages.
