Principal's Message

It has been another dynamic week here at Lake Braddock! We've enjoyed celebrating the creativity and talent on display at the Pyramid Art Show, the innovative spirit of the Fashion Marketing Fashion Show, the talent of our Guitar students at Assessment, and the dedication of our athletes as Spring Sports continue to energize our campus. It's wonderful to see so much engagement and passion within our school.

Congratulations to HS Science Teacher Darren Myzak and MS Counselor Melissa Johnson for earning National Board Certification this year. This is an arduous process and we are proud to call them Bruins!

As we wrap up this busy period, the opportunity for Spring Break next week is certainly well-deserved for our hardworking students and staff. We hope everyone takes this time to relax, recharge, and enjoy some time away from the daily routines.

We eagerly anticipate welcoming everyone back on Monday, April 21st, for a Gold Day, ready to continue the great work happening at Lake Braddock and finish the school year strong together.

Go Bruins!

Lindsey Kearns

Get to Know FCPS and the Resources Available to Families

Being connected to your school community helps you stay informed and support your child’s success. Take some time to get familiar with the many resources and tools available to FCPS families, including:

  • School Age Child Care (SACC) – This Fairfax County government program provides a safe and fun environment before and after school for elementary school-age children.
  • FCPS Communications for Families – FCPS shares news and information to support student learning and promote family engagement.
  • FCPS Family Academy – We know that as a parent or caregiver, you play a critical role in your child's education. The Family Academy compiles classes, webinars, workshops, and programs offered by FCPS to help you support your child's needs and learning at home. The Family Academy also includes information about resources to help you ensure your child has what they need to succeed.

Family Liaisons – Family liaisons serve as a link between families and schools. We have two wonderful family liaisons at Lake Braddock:  Ms. Alejandra Pena-Ulloa and Ms. Susan Kwon.

New Information and Important Reminders

Spring Testing

Spring Testing is quickly approaching. All-important testing information and the testing calendar can be found on the Lake Braddock Testing Website. Please note important dates your student may be testing and make every attempt to avoid testing interruptions.

High School students do not take every SOL therefore emails will be sent to students providing non testing students with their study hall locations for April 29, May 1 and May 5.  Please be on the lookout for those emails.

If you have specific questions about testing, please reach out to your student’s counselor or subject specific teacher.

Earth day

Earth Day Spirit Week

When we return from Spring Break, we will recognize #FCPSEarthWeek. We will be spreading the message of Environmental Stewardship by promoting and participating in our Earth Spirit Week.

Monday: Wear blue

Tuesday: Wear green

Wednesday: Wear white

Thursday: Wear red

Friday: Wear Animal print

fashion

Last night, we celebrated Earth Day and saw sustainability in action! Various clubs offered a book swap, succulent plantings and more, and the evening ended with a sustainability fashion show.

Students in Fashion Marketing received a grant to go thrifting and then upcycle the outfits. They presented their outfits at the In the Garden Fashion Show.

Thank you to our Marketing Teachers for continuing to support these programs. They are making a difference at Bruin Nation and in our world.

art show

On Wednesday, April 9th, Lake Braddock Secondary School was excited to open its doors to K-12 students and their families for the Annual Pyramid Art Show. The show featured work from students in our elementary feeder schools all the way up to our artists on the brink of high school graduation. It was an amazing celebration of creativity and could not have happened without the support of our artists, art teachers, Lake Braddock staff and of course our community.

FBLA State Competition

Last weekend, Lake Braddock's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) participated in the State Competition and had four students win awards. Congratulations to Manas P. (1st place in three events), Michael R. and QB L. (2nd place in Digital Video Production), and Lanny H. (3rd place in Intro to Business Communications). Well done, team!

The World of Online Gaming: Opportunities and Challenges

Online gaming can offer children many benefits, including improved problem-solving skills, creativity, and even social interaction. However, it's crucial for parents to be aware of the potential risks associated with this popular pastime.

Potential Challenges:

  • Unknown Territory: The vast online gaming world can be difficult to navigate. Parents may not always know which games their children are playing or who they are interacting with online.
  • Inappropriate Content: Some games may contain violence, sexual content, or adult language that is unsuitable for children.
  • In-App Purchases: Many games include in-app purchases that can rack up unexpected costs.
  • Online Predators: Children can encounter online predators who may try to:
    • Gather personal information: Such as passwords and credit card numbers.
    • Engage in online enticement: By attempting to have inappropriate conversations or requesting inappropriate images.

Tips for Parents:

  • Play Together: Spend time playing games with your child to understand the games they enjoy and the types of interactions they encounter.
  • Set Clear Rules: Establish clear rules and guidelines for online gaming, including time limits and age-appropriate content restrictions.
  • Utilize Parental Controls: Explore the parental control features available on gaming consoles and devices to limit access to inappropriate content and monitor online activity.
  • Open Communication: Encourage open communication with your child about their online experiences.

By staying informed and actively involved in your child's gaming activities, you can help them enjoy the benefits of online gaming while minimizing the risks.

FCPS News

Excellence Is at a Crossroads

Fairfax County residents believe in the value of a strong public school system. Residents live here because of the excellence of Fairfax County Public Schools, even our community members with grown children. Excellence in FCPS comes from its people — dedicated teachers and support staff who make sure that our students are ready to learn. Today, that excellence is at a crossroads.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will finalize the budget on Tuesday, May 6, and the current advertised budget underfunds FCPS by $150 million.

Now is the time. Do we want continued excellence, or are we ready to consider cuts to important programs that we have come to expect from FCPS?
