Students from the Medical Assistant and Dental Assistant classes provided hands-on activities for students at Fairhill Elementary School who are exploring various careers they may be interested in for their future. This is the fifth year this event has taken place at the Elementary School and the fourth time our Academy students have been involved.
EMT's may need to assist with delivering a baby in case of imminent delivery, therefore, understanding the proper procedures was a topic covered in the EMT course. Exploring Health Science/Language of Medicine teacher Patricia McDonald, who has been a US Navy Captain and Midwife for many years prior to teaching, instructed EMT students on the procedure. Each student had the chance to practice delivering a baby using the in class birthing simulators. They also learned how to provide assistance to the baby through checking the umbilical cord, supporting the head and shoulders, assessing condition of the baby, suctioning airway and ways to encourage breathing.
It's hard to be grossed out when a presentation begins with chocolate chip cookies. Dr. Hoo-Fatt, Histology Program Education Coordinator with Inova Laboratories spoke to the early morning Biotech Foundations class by first talking about his career path and coaxing the students awake by offering cookies at 8am! Dr. Hoo-Fatt demonstrated how cells are extracted from human tissue and then analyzed for any abnormalities.
For the week leading up to Spring Break, EMT students were trained by Fairfax County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members to learn details of being prepared in a disaster, how to organize a disaster scene and how to provide life giving care to those who have been effected by the incident. At the end of the week, students were given a mass casualty scenario (Hurricane), given their roles in the situation and then told to preform the drill as if it were real.
Students from the Medical Assistant and Exploring Health Science classes were given the opportunity to be moulaged by the CERT Moulage Team to serve as actors in the scenario and given fake wounds and scripted injuries for the EMT students to triage.
EMT students were tasked to work as a team to search, rescue and triage "wounded citizens" in the mass casualty drill.
In preparation for packing supplies for the move to the new Academy classrooms, Rick Schubert - Pharmacy Tech Instructor, took the opportunity to teach students how to transfer IV fluids from pressurized IV bags to evacuated containers before packing them for the move.
